On the recent AI and Society Forum at MIT<\/a>, experts from across the Institute discussed the potential advantages and dangers of technological innovation on labor, the character of labor, civil discourse, election administration, and other topics.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0event featured individual research presentations and panel discussions, in addition to\u00a0a musical performance<\/a> exploring using generative artificial intelligence in the humanities.<\/p>\n

The forum was co-organized by the\u00a0School of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences<\/a> (SHASS) and the\u00a0Social and Ethical Responsibilities of Computing<\/a> (SERC). It was presented in collaboration with two of MIT\u2019s strategic initiatives: the\u00a0MIT Generative AI Impact Consortium<\/a> (MGAIC) and the\u00a0MIT Human Insight Collaborative<\/a> (MITHIC).<\/p>\n

Agust\u00edn Rayo<\/a>, the Kenan Sahin Dean of SHASS, and Dan Huttenlocher<\/a>, dean of the MIT Schwarzman College of Computing, provided opening remarks.<\/p>\n

Rayo said bringing scholars from across MIT together was intentional because understanding AI\u2019s impact requires expertise from disciplines throughout the Institute.<\/p>\n

\u201cTaking note of the societal consequences of AI shouldn’t be a departure from MIT\u2019s mission; it\u2019s a way of ensuring that our technical leadership has maximum impact,\u201d Rayo said.<\/p>\n

Huttenlocher added that computing and AI\u2019s rapid growth makes it critical to support interdisciplinary conversations and research.<\/p>\n

\u201cUnderstanding where AI excels and where it falls short is important not only to unlocking its advantages, but additionally to avoiding critical errors, overreliance, and unintended consequences,\u201d Huttenlocher said.<\/p>\n

Jobs and AI\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Held within the Tull Concert Hall in MIT\u2019s Linde Music Constructing, the May 12 forum opened with a keynote presentation from economist David Autor<\/a>, the Daniel (1972) and Gail Rubinfeld Professor within the MIT Department of Economics. Autor\u00a0challenged the common narrative that AI will simply eliminate jobs by proposing as an alternative that technology’s impact relies on the way it affects the scarcity and value of human expertise.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Daniela Rus<\/a>, the MIT Panasonic Professor of Computer Science and director of the Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL), described excitement around ways AI could enhance the workplace.<\/p>\n

Democracy and AI<\/strong><\/p>\n

Chara Podimata<\/a>, the Class of 1942 Profession Development Assistant Professor and assistant professor of operations research and statistics within the MIT Sloan School of Management,\u00a0presented her research on auditing large language models for bias in election information.<\/p>\n
