NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte on Wednesday used a White House meeting to attempt to persuade U.S. President Donald Trump that the alliance was meeting its defence spending commitments and creating economic advantages for the U.S., counting on visual aids while pushing back on Trump\u2019s criticisms of allies.<\/p>\n

Trump and his top administration officials have complained that European allies didn\u2019t help the U.S. perform its initial strikes within the war with Iran, and have openly mulled reducing U.S. contributions to NATO and even questioning its membership entirely consequently.<\/p>\n

Rutte\u2019s visit to Washington also comes two weeks before the annual NATO leaders\u2019 summit in Ankara, Turkey, putting further pressure on the secretary-general to appease Trump\u2019s anger.<\/p>\n

Rutte, as he has done up to now, acknowledged Trump\u2019s disappointment but in addition sought to make the case that NATO allies remain reliable partners in collective defence.<\/p>\n

Rutte also noted that 4,000 to five,000 U.S. planes took off from bases in Europe before Iran and the U.S. agreed to a ceasefire.<\/p>\n

\u201cI do know there have been isolated cases about which you’ve gotten been really dissatisfied, but generally speaking, your European allies have been there with you,\u201d he told Trump.<\/p>\n

Rutte then walked over to a series of charts displayed on easels showing what he said was the effect Trump has had on getting European and Canadian allies to spice up defence spending.<\/p>\n

He said that spending has increased by a collective US$250 billion for the reason that starting of 2025, and over US$1 trillion since Trump first became president in 2017, which Rutte called \u201cthe Trump Trillion.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI can assure you that it is because of Russia, due to threat, but I’m also absolutely convinced that you simply being president of america\u201d can be an element, Rutte said while pointing at Trump.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis,\u201d he added, pointing back on the charts, \u201cis your evidence.\u201d<\/p>\n

He then claimed that roughly half of that spending has been on U.S.-produced defence equipment, creating over 112,000 American jobs, plus one other 83,000 jobs from European defence corporations investing within the U.S.<\/p>\n

\u201cVery interesting,\u201d Trump said after Rutte concluded his presentation.<\/p>\n

Yet Trump proceeded to again criticize allies for not immediately meeting the brand new five per cent of GDP defence spending goal he pushed for, prompting Rutte to once more gently ward off.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a little bit of a mixed bag, but most of them are doing it,\u201d Rutte said concerning the spending increases. \u201cAnd the alliance is a lot stronger for this reason.\u201d<\/p>\n

Trump singled out Italy, the UK, France, Germany and \u201chorror show\u201d Spain for not helping initially of the Iran war, regardless that he insisted that \u201cwe didn\u2019t need assistance.\u201d<\/p>\n
