The Lions have waived cornerback Terrion Arnold<\/strong>, per a team announcement<\/a>. The previous first-round pick was recently charged with eight felonies in Florida stemming from a series of incidents in February.<\/p>\n

<\/a>Arnold, 23, turned himself in last week in Hillsborough County, which incorporates Tampa, and was initially denied bond. Earlier today, a judge granted his release on a $1MM bond, which might have allowed him to take part in training camp.<\/p>\n

Often, when NFL players are facing criminal charges, each the league and individual teams wait for the legal process to play out. In some cases, those players are placed on the commissioner\u2019s exempt list. However the Lions opted to part ways with Arnold lower than every week after his arrest, mere hours after he was granted the liberty that may have allowed him to proceed preparing for the season with the team as he awaited trial.<\/p>\n

Detroit\u2019s decision might be a response to the severity of the crimes Arnold is accused of and\/or a sign that there is powerful evidence against him. He’s facing 4 counts each of armed robbery and kidnapping with a maximum punishment of life in prison. Law enforcement believes he’s the \u201cprimary conspirator\u201d amongst a gaggle of six other defendants, two of which have already taken plea deals in exchange for his or her cooperation as witnesses.<\/p>\n

Once Arnold\u2019s release is formally processed by the league, he’ll go on waivers where he and the rest of his contract might be claimed by any team. That seems exceedingly unlikely given his situation. As a substitute, he’ll likely develop into and remain a free agent until his legal process concludes.<\/p>\n

If true, the allegations against Arnold will qualify as conduct detrimental to the team that may allow the Lions to void the remaining guarantees on his contract. They may seek to recoup the $3.6MM in bonus prorations already paid out (via OverTheCap<\/a>) that will probably be charged on the 2026 and 2027 salary caps. In effect, Detroit should find a way to avoid any dead money that may normally result from Arnold\u2019s release.<\/p>\n

Arnold was already set to battle for a starting job within the Lions\u2019 secondary this summer. The 2023 No. 24 pick began 15 games as a rookie, but his playing time fluctuated last 12 months attributable to injuries and uneven play. He eventually underwent season-ending shoulder surgery in December and was not expected to be back to full strength by training camp.<\/p>\n

The Lions already shored up their cornerback room this offseason by re-signing Rock Ya-Sin<\/strong>, adding Roger McCreary<\/strong> in free agency, and drafting Keith Abney II<\/strong> out of Arizona State. Arnold\u2019s release firmly puts Ya-Sin, who began six games in Detroit last 12 months, in pole position for the starting outside cornerback job opposite D.J. Reed<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Abney, a fifth-round pick who was rated as a Day 2 player by some scouts, may now get a crack at starting reps in camp. McCreary\u2019s usage can even be interesting to observe. He has primarily played nickel within the last three years but spent most of his rookie 12 months on the boundary. With Lions safeties Brian Branch<\/strong> and Kerby Joseph<\/strong> still recovering from last 12 months\u2019s injuries, the team could have intended for McCreary to play within the slot until the secondary had more depth. Now, they could must see see what he offers on the skin where they’re suddenly thin on proven talent.<\/p>\n

This marks the second time in three offseasons the Lions have proceeded this manner with a cornerback who bumped into significant off-field trouble. The team didn’t wait for the legal process to play out after Cameron Sutton<\/strong>\u2018s 2024 arrest. The team released the 2023 free agent signing, brought in to start out. Arnold was drafted weeks after Detroit cut Sutton.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
