We finally know why weird silver balls have been appearing on beaches in Queensland, Australia. <\/p>\n

Six metal spheres washed up on Friday, Saturday and Sunday near Forrest Beach, a seaside community 10 miles southeast of Ingham.<\/p>\n

Firefighters in hazmat suits, space experts and national emergency officials have been scratching their heads as to what these objects are.<\/p>\n

Five of the chrome balls were placed in drums, with the police enforcing a 160ft exclusion zone over fears they\u2019re \u2018toxic\u2019.<\/p>\n

Local Trevor Kyle told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation<\/a> that the primary orb was found by a crab fisherman, who was told to ditch his pot by cops.<\/p>\n

Kyle initially shrugged it off as a buoy but began to fret when he saw officers flood the beach.<\/p>\n

\u2018You would see that it was getting larger and larger and there have been questions of the bomb squad being involved, SES possibly, firies, ambo,\u2019 he added.<\/p>\n

However the Australian Space Agency revealed on Monday what these spheres probably are \u2013 \u2018space balls\u2019. <\/p>\n

\u2018Space balls\u2019 (no, not the Nineteen Eighties movie) is a somewhat goofy word for pressurised balls of fuel utilized in rockets.<\/p>\n

The agency said on X: \u2018The objects\u2019 location and characteristics are consistent with debris from a foreign rocket body that recently re-entered the atmosphere from orbit.\u2019<\/p>\n

They\u2019re a standard type of space junk, with roughly15,800 tonnes <\/a>of old satellites and rocket scraps now crowding the cosmos above our heads.<\/p>\n

This somewhat aligns with what experts originally assumed the balls were \u2013 a fuel\u00a0tank or bladder tank containing hydrazine, a highly volatile propellant, from an old rocket. Hence why emergency responders were so on edge about them. <\/p>\n

But Aussie space officials stressed that the orbs are secure.<\/p>\n

\u2018The Agency is continuous to have interaction with international authorities to formally confirm the launch vehicle and launching state,\u2019 it added.<\/p>\n

Speculation was rife online given the shortage of scorch marks on the balls \u2013 temperature\u00a0during reentry can exceed 1,500\u00b0C.<\/p>\n

Yet Dr Alice Gorman, an area archaeologist nicknamed \u2018Dr\u00a0Space\u00a0Junk\u2019, told the Australian Broadcasting Network that there\u2019s a reason for that. <\/p>\n

The associate professor at Flinders University said the balls are fabricated from titanium alloy, which might withstand blistering heat. <\/p>\n

\u2018Many rockets and spacecraft have liquid fuel systems that involve fuels under high pressure which are in these pressure vessels fabricated from robust material,\u2019 she said.<\/p>\n

\u2018These parts of the fuel system often survive because their melting points are higher than the temperature coming back through the atmosphere.\u2019<\/p>\n

She added that Australia is a dumping ground for space junk, with the country a signatory to the 1967\u00a0United Nations Outer Space Treaty<\/a>.<\/p>\n

This implies the launching state retains ownership of the launch material. <\/p>\n

Given the sheer size of Australia, washed-up space junk is common and can get more in order rocket and artificial satellite launches increase.<\/p>\n

A trunk from one among Elon Musk\u2019s rockets, the SpaceX Dragon, crashed onto a beach in Latest South Wales in 2022. <\/p>\n

Then, a pressure vessel from an Indian launch vehicle washed up in Western Australia in 2023 \u2013 India didn’t request the debris back. <\/p>\n
