At the very least two people were killed and 4 others injured after a person opened fire on a Latin street festival in Toronto, Canada, yesterday.<\/p>\n

Gunshots rang out as around 13,000 had gathered for Salsa on St Clair near St Clair Avenue West at 8.12pm local time.<\/p>\n

At the very least six people were treated for gunshot wounds. Of them, two men died on the scene and 4 were taken to hospital.<\/p>\n

Among the many injured was a girl, a witness told CP24<\/a>.<\/p>\n

No arrests have been made and no suspect descriptions have been released. Two firearms were recovered on the scene. <\/p>\n

Festival-goers told Toronto Today<\/a> that they saw a \u2018huge wave\u2019 of individuals running and screaming as police swarmed the salsa-themed street party.<\/p>\n

Vendor Patsy Gutierrez said: \u2018Everybody began getting frantic after which we stopped serving.<\/p>\n

\u2018I don\u2019t think it needs to be something that\u2019s happening in these form of events.\u2019<\/p>\n

William Ajselett was lining up to purchase food when he saw \u2018a crowd-crushing situation\u2019 that he feared his wife and friends were caught in. <\/p>\n

Councillor Josh Matlow said the atmosphere of the festival, one among Toronto\u2019s hottest summer attractions, was \u2018very peaceful\u2019 earlier.<\/p>\n

\u2018The vibe was great,\u2019 he said. <\/p>\n

Police still \u2018piecing together\u2019 what led to shooting<\/h2>\n

The police said <\/a>on X at around 9.30pm that \u2018suspect(s) [are] still outstanding\u2019.<\/p>\n

Despite initial fears of an lively shooter, Toronto Police Deputy Chief Frank Barredo said this \u2018turned out to not be the case\u2019.<\/p>\n

\u2018It\u2019s very difficult to say with certainty what precipitated this,\u2019 Barredo said at an 11pm press conference. <\/p>\n

\u2018I can inform you that there was an exchange of gunfire between individuals and that two firearms were recovered.\u2019<\/p>\n

It was not known if any of the suspects were among the many victims. <\/p>\n

The deputy chief added: \u2018We are going to piece together a few of those bits of data and after we\u2019re in a position to share it with the general public, we definitely will.\u2019<\/p>\n

Salsa on St Clair, which has filled the town with live music, food stands and salsa dancing for the past 22 years, was shut down.<\/p>\n

The marquee event guarantees an \u2018unforgettable day\u2019, its website <\/a>says. <\/p>\n

With mass shootings rare in Toronto, politicians expressed shock and outrage on the incident. <\/p>\n

Prime Minister Mark Carney said: \u2018I’m horrified by the shooting that has killed two people on the Salsa on St. Clair Festival in Toronto. \u00a0 <\/p>\n

\u2018My prayers are with the families grieving their family members, those that are in critical condition, and everybody who has been affected by this horrific event.\u2019<\/p>\n

Mayor Olivia Chow\u00a0said the shooting left her \u2018beyond words\u2019.<\/p>\n

\u2018I\u2019m deeply disturbed and indignant about this reckless, irresponsible act of violence \u2013 and right in the midst of a festival attended by families, children, seniors,\u2019 she told reporters. <\/p>\n

Ontario Premier Doug Ford paid tribute on X<\/a>.<\/p>\n

He said: \u2018Thanks to Toronto Police and our first responders for responding to this horrific incident. <\/p>\n

\u2018The person responsible should be caught, delivered to justice and spend the remainder of their life behind bars.\u2019<\/p>\n
