Republic of Congo (DRC) has tested positive for the Ebola virus, according <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/media\/releases\/2026\/cdc-ebola-outbreak-in-democratic-republic-of-congo-and-uganda.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The CDC said it was aware of a U.S. citizen who tested positive for Bundibugyo virus and that it&#8217;s working with the patient\u2019s employing organization, other U.S. federal agencies, public health authorities and partners in DRC \u201cto assist prevent further transmission by supporting contact tracing and performing risk assessments to discover high-risk contacts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The CDC didn&#8217;t provide any further details or discover the U.S. citizen who tested positive for the Bundibugyo virus, \u00a0a rare form of the Ebola virus that&#8217;s behind an ongoing outbreak within the Central African country and has no approved medicines or vaccines.<\/p>\n<div href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/07\/11\/world\/africa\/dr-congo-ebola-american-us-citizen.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Latest York Times reports<\/a> that the affected American worked for Samaritan\u2019s Purse, which is a disaster relief organization.<\/p>\n<p>A spokesperson for the group told the outlet that the employee has been in isolation since last Monday and is being cared for at one in every of two Ebola treatment centres that the organization runs in Ituri.<\/p>\n<p>Global News has reached out to Samaritan\u2019s Purse for further comment, but has not received a response.<\/p>\n<div class=\"c-inlineSignup\" data-newsletter-inline=\"\">\n<div class=\"c-inlineSignup__image\">\n\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" width=\"170\" height=\"225\" loading=\"lazy\" recorded on the continent, with 1,830 confirmed cases in Congo, including 648 deaths. Cases have also been confirmed in Uganda.<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. citizen working for the humanitarian organization is the second American to contract the virus through the ongoing outbreak.<\/p>\n<p>A U.S. national who tested positive for the virus in Congo arrived in Berlin in May for treatment in a special isolation ward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAn American national who was working in DRC has also been confirmed positive, and been transferred to Germany,\u201d WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said on the time.<\/p>\n<p>Christian aid organization Serge confirmed\u00a0one in every of its doctors \u2014 whom it identified as American medical missionary Dr. Peter Stafford \u2014 had been evacuated from Congo and was \u201creceiving specialized medical treatment\u201d after he developed Ebola symptoms.<\/p>\n<div class=\"c-ad c-ad--bigbox l-article__ad c-ad--tallSticky\">\n<p>Story continues below commercial<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/serge.org\/blog\/american-medical-missionary-tests-positive-for-ebola-in-democratic-republic-of-congo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Serge announced<\/a>\u00a0in May that every one the organization\u2019s employees with \u201cpotential exposure have been safely evacuated from the Democratic Republic of Congo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe received confirmation that Dr. Peter Stafford safely arrived at Charite University Hospital in Germany, where he&#8217;ll receive the very best level of clinical care and treatment,\u201d said Dr. Scott Myhre, Serge area director for East and Central Africa.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe complex, coordinated efforts of many government agencies and international health authorities resulted in Peter Stafford\u2019s secure transport and the protection of those involved in his transfer. Serge leadership extends their deepest gratitude to all involved in Peter\u2019s care and is praying for all involved within the fight to finish this ebolavirus outbreak for the great of the people of the DRC.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Stafford, a 39-year-old board-certified general surgeon with a specialization in burn care, tested positive for Bundibugyo Ebola virus after serving patients in Bunia before Dr. Patrick LaRochelle, 46, had also departed DRC for other locations, where they might be monitored in close proximity to expert care if needed, Serge said on the time.<\/p>\n<p>By June 15, Stafford and his wife and their 4 children had arrived safely in the US, <a href=\"https:\/\/serge.org\/blog\/american-medical-missionary-tests-positive-for-ebola-in-democratic-republic-of-congo\/\"
