A British pub landlady has been shot dead while on a Caribbean holiday.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Elaine McGowan, 65, who ran The Castle Hotel in Hythe, Kent, was killed in front of her husband in Trinidad and Tobago on July 5.<\/p>\n

Family and friends remembered her as a \u2018sensible person\u2019 and a \u2018helpful and beautiful lady\u2019 as they appealed for anyone with information to return forward.<\/p>\n

Elaine and her husband were standing outside her godfather\u2019s home when a silver Nissan Tiida pulled up alongside them.<\/p>\n

The gunman stepped out of the vehicle and opened fire before fleeing the scene.<\/p>\n

Elaine was taken to the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Centre but was declared dead on arrival.<\/p>\n

Hemang Patel, who works at Saltwood General Stores along with his brother, Hemanshu, said the news had stunned the village. <\/p>\n

He had worked at The Castle under the previous owner but had got to know Elaine\u00a0when she took it on before the Covid pandemic. <\/p>\n

She ran the pub from 2019 until last summer.<\/p>\n

\u2018I couldn\u2019t imagine what happened to her. It\u2019s an enormous shame. <\/p>\n

\u2018To me, she\u2019s at all times been an excellent person. Numerous people know her. It\u2019s been quite shocking this week. I can\u2019t imagine it\u2019s happened to someone, you don\u2019t expect it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mr Patel, 40, said he had seen Elaine just two months ago, when she told him she was travelling to Trinidad and Tobago on a family matter. <\/p>\n

Mr Patel said: \u2018We\u2019ve at all times supported one another. She used our shop. We go there [the pub] on a regular basis. She\u2019s at all times been a helpful and beautiful lady.<\/p>\n

He shared his condolences to her husband and her family and friends.<\/p>\n

Elaine\u2019s sister Joanne Butcher said she had been in Trinidad conducting business because the director of Cocal Retreat, her father\u2019s farm in Manzanilla, and \u2018continuing his legacy\u2019.<\/p>\n

He said: \u2018Elaine, myself and my cousins grew up in South London within the 60\u2019s and our parents \u2013 all immigrants from Trinidad and Tobago \u2013 at all times believed within the values of family and community.<\/p>\n

\u2018We spent every weekend and each holiday together and I learned at an early age how vital family is in good times and in bad. <\/p>\n

\u2018If anyone has any information concerning this crime, please contact the police in Trinidad who’re conducting a radical investigation.\u2019<\/p>\n

Ms Butcher added that her sister is survived by her \u2018beloved husband\u2019 Ian and \u2018many, many family and friends\u2019.<\/p>\n

Tributes have continued to be paid online, with Rosalie Terry describing Elaine\u2019s death as \u2018devastating news\u2019 and \u2018an incredible lack of a incredible friend\u2019.<\/p>\n

A Foreign Office spokesperson said: \u2018We’re supporting the family of a British woman who died in Trinidad and Tobago and are involved with the local authorities.\u2019<\/p>\n
