Is that this where you expected to be 17 years later?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\tI don\u2019t know what I expected, to be honest with you. Once I auditioned for the show, my hope was, \u201cHey, I\u2019d love a probability to make a very cool album, after which hopefully some more after that.\u201d So my expectations were actually kind of practical. I had began to fantasize about what it might be prefer to be within the recording industry and make original music, but I hadn\u2019t really done a whole lot of it. That is something we haven\u2019t really seen a whole lot of recently.\u201d Obviously they hadn\u2019t really launched an Idol who was open about their sexuality, and even an Idol who was that left of center basically. It was type of a cookie-cutter formula at that time. So from my impressions, the industry was guessing at the identical time I used to be guessing. We were all just attempting to figure it out. \n\tWere you as much as Broadway level at that time?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\tRoughly. Right before American Idol<\/em>, I had done about six months on the road with the primary national tour of Wicked<\/em>. Then I used to be within the L.A. company of Wicked<\/em> for about two years before auditioning for Idol<\/em>. So I hadn\u2019t actually been, quote-unquote, on Broadway officially, but I used to be working for a Broadway company, but I used to be at that level. By the point I auditioned for Idol<\/em>, I used to be at this crossroads where I used to be heavily considering making the move from L.A. to Latest York, knowing there\u2019d be rather a lot more opportunity there for theater. But I kept putting it off. I desired to explore themes and musical styles that weren\u2019t really common in theater. <\/p>\n\n\tBut within the 20 years since I stepped away, there\u2019s been a whole lot of recent material, a whole lot of recent exploration. There\u2019s been an entire awakening on Broadway of diversity and different walks of life, and there\u2019s just rather a lot more to supply an actor now. So coming back to theater, it was like, \u201cOh, it\u2019s a special world now \u2014 there\u2019s so far more of an open playing field.\u201d And even with the Emcee, who\u2019s at all times been another, strange little character, it felt much more the case that you would be able to make it into whatever you wish.<\/p>\n

\n\tEarly on, I took a whole lot of liberties. What\u2019s interesting is that over time, I took fewer liberties and stuck more to the melody. To start with, I felt like I had rather a lot to prove. \n\tI wanted the album to live in a darker world than a few of my previous work. We\u2019re living through political and social unrest, anxiety, fear and uncertainty, and I wanted that to be the undercurrent. Sometimes we don\u2019t realize how much the world around us seeps into our personal lives.<\/p>\n
\n\tAre you happier now? Has the pain subsided?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\tThat\u2019s the attractive thing about making music. It becomes a form of therapy. You place all of your thoughts and fears right into a song, and it turns them into something positive.
