A professional-Palestinian demonstrator has been charged with terrorism over his alleged actions in association with Hamas, Toronto police said Wednesday.<\/p>\n

Ahmad Hassan Hajahmad, 33, was arrested following a joint investigation by the Toronto police hate crime unit and the RCMP national security team.<\/p>\n

He appeared in court on Tuesday.<\/p>\n

In a statement<\/a>, the Toronto Police Service said that between May 25 and Sept. 7, 2024, Hajahmad attended pro-Palestinian demonstrations in downtown Toronto.<\/p>\n

Using a microphone, Hajahmad made public statements that advocated for \u201charm against members of the Israeli and Jewish communities,\u201d police said.<\/p>\n

Police said they searched his residence on March 7, 2025, and seized \u201cmultiple electronic devices.\u201d<\/p>\n

The evidence supported \u201cthe allegation that the accused acted for the advantage of, and in association with, Hamas, a chosen terrorist group,\u201d police added.<\/p>\n

The Ontario and federal attorneys general\u00a0approved the costs on July 20.<\/p>\n

Hamas is \u201ca radical Islamist-nationalist terrorist organization,\u201d in accordance with the Public Safety Canada website. It’s on Canada\u2019s list of designated terror groups.<\/p>\n

On Oct. 7, 2023, Hamas gunmen crossed into Israel and killed greater than 800 civilians, including Canadian residents. The Israeli military response killed tens of hundreds of Palestinians.<\/p>\n

The case against Hajahmad makes the rare alleged link between pro-Palestinian protests and the Hamas terrorist organization.<\/p>\n

Hajahmad has been charged with participating in or contributing to activities of a terrorist group. If convicted, he faces as much as 10 years<\/a> in prison.<\/p>\n

\u201cInvestigations into criminal offences committed at demonstrations don’t end when the event is over,\u201d said Toronto police Chief Myron Demkiw.<\/p>\n

He said police had worked closely with the RCMP\u2019s Integrated National Security Enforcement Team \u201cto pursue the terrorism charge warranted by the investigation.\u201d<\/p>\n
