The title translates to church rowdy, and it’s a period drama. The film was initially released in theatres on April 17 and starts its streaming journey on SonyLIV from today (July 24). The director, known for the power-packed Jana Gana Mana starring Prithviraj Sukumaran, got here back with one other political drama, so naturally it gave the impression of an exciting prospect, coupled with Thomas, who is thought to experiment together with his characters. The thrill and anticipation were there despite Dijo\u2019s previous film, Malayalee From India, tanking on the box office.<\/p>\n Sadly, Tovino Thomas\u2019s film, too, didn’t have run on the box office despite opening. The film\u2019s theatrical run outside Kerala lasted lower than per week. With mixed reviews and other Malayalam movies gaining love on the box office, the political drama did not garner attention. But movies often get a very different reception once they begin their streaming journey. Is that the case with this one? Let\u2019s discover.<\/p>\n Pallichattambi sets its fictional story against the backdrop of Kerala\u2019s socio-political movement within the Fifties. It begins in 1930, where landowners brutally kill people from the lower caste. A wealthy few own all of the land, and even the British fear one such powerful landlord, Pattelar Kunjambu Nambiar (Prithviraj Sukumaran). While the film establishes the landowner\u2019s dominance, it concurrently introduces its protagonist, Krishna Pillai (Tovino Thomas), who’s born and grows up under the care of an adoptive family and a church priest.<\/p>\n It’s a town where there is no such thing as a divide on the idea of caste and creed but on the idea of haves and have-nots. We’re then taken to 1957, when the Communist Party forms the federal government for the primary time in India, in Kerala. There’s a Liberation Struggle against the ruling party during this timeline. That is when a church within the small town of Kaaniyaar feels threatened by the Communists and believes they’re teaching people to not imagine in God.<\/p>\n To take down the Communists, the church hires Krishna Pillai, aka Pothan, as the top of the Christopher Sena. The aim of the Sena is to show young girls and boys the art of self-defence and save the town from the Communists. Does the Pallichattambi achieve taking down the Communists, or does he himself turn out to be considered one of them? That’s how the narrative unfolds and attempts to explore Communism as a complete.<\/p>\n Tovino Thomas has been the face of the film because the start; let\u2019s address him first. He plays a person who grew up under the influence of his adopted Hindu family and a church priest. The character doesn’t know learn how to differentiate people based on their caste and creed and only looks at them as humans. He’s a person who doesn’t query much due to limited knowledge passed on to him. It is a period when there is no such thing as a web or quick access to education. You learn every thing through human interaction. Tovino suits the role perfectly as an innocent man who also must have a powerful physique, as he has invested his time in learning martial arts. Due to his skill and knowledge in teaching self-defense, he gets hired by the church. The actor does his part to perfection and shines through the motion sequences.<\/p>\n In Pallichattambi, Kayadu Lohar has very limited screen time but makes an impact. She plays a theatre artist named Rebecca, whose beauty makes all the lads within the town ignore every thing else. She can be a staunch Communist and plays a job in changing Tovino Thomas\u2018 mindset, almost like a teacher introducing him to Communism. Vijayaraghavan is a delight to observe because the church head of Kaaniyaar. Prithviraj plays the antagonist, but despite giving his best, the character\u2019s extravagance proves to be a spoilsport.<\/p>\n <\/span><\/p>\n One in all the largest issues with the film is its predictable plot. When you are even remotely accustomed to Kerala politics and its movies, you recognize that Communism is not going to be shown in a nasty light, although evidently way at first. From the protagonist changing his mind to his past reference to the film\u2019s primary villain, every thing may be easily anticipated.<\/p>\n The film\u2019s treatment can be quite familiar.
