The chief prosecutor of the International Criminal Court was faraway from office on Friday, nearly two years after sexual misconduct allegations against him first emerged.<\/p>\n

By a big majority, the ICC\u2019s 125-member states ousted British barrister Karim Khan for \u201cserious misconduct and serious breach of duty,\u201d the court\u2019s oversight body, the Assembly of States Parties, said in an announcement.<\/p>\n

The lengthy and complex process has pitted human rights advocates, staff and member states against each other at a time when the court is already facing daunting challenges, including a campaign by the US to \u201cdismantle\u201d the ICC, which was established to prosecute people answerable for humanity\u2019s worst crimes.<\/p>\n

The oversight body will now must hold elections for a brand new prosecutor, someone who’s more likely to face sanctions by the Trump administration, which has already brought the force of monetary penalties and travel bans on 13 members of staff, including Khan.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe ICC should hold itself to the very best standards. This includes ensuring a protected workplace with effective and credible mechanisms available to staff or others who experience abuse, including sexual violence or harassment,\u201d Liz Evenson, international justice director at Human Rights Watch, said in an announcement to the AP.<\/p>\n

The 56-year-old Khan was accused of sexual misconduct with a female aide, as outlined by The Associated Press in a series of stories, allegations he has steadfastly denied. Based on documents seen by the AP, Khan engaged in a sexual relationship with the lady and tried to forestall her from pursuing her allegations.<\/p>\n

Khan\u2019s lawyers criticized the method resulting in his ouster, complaining that he was blocked from addressing the session Friday and arguing the regulations had been rewritten to drawback him.<\/p>\n

Khan\u2019s \u201cremoval was determined by a process by which he was never given a good opportunity to be heard, and in defiance of the conclusions of the independent judges who examined the complete evidential record,\u201d attorney Tayab Ali said in an announcement. He said Khan\u2019s legal team would challenge the choice \u201cthrough all available legal mechanisms.\u201d<\/p>\n

The choice comes at a time when the worldwide tribunal is under enormous pressure.<\/p>\n

In an announcement last week, Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the U.S. was launching a \u201csweeping campaign to dismantle the threat posed by the International Criminal Court to U.S. sovereignty.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rubio said he’ll pressure member states to withdraw from the institution, sanction organizations that work with the court and ban staff from traveling to the US. Countries that \u201cenjoy the advantages of the U.S. security umbrella\u201d will likely be called upon to reject the court\u2019s jurisdiction over U.S. residents.<\/p>\n

Hours after Friday\u2019s vote, Venezuela announced it will withdraw from the court. \u201cVenezuela considers that the Court\u2019s actions reflect a demonstrated geographical bias, which has disproportionately concentrated its work on African and Latin American countries, to the detriment of the Global South,\u201d F\u00e9lix Plasencia, the country\u2019s foreign affairs minister announced in an announcement.<\/p>\n
