A Canadian woman of Chinese origin who was an intern at NATO\u2019s military headquarters in Belgium has been arrested on spying charges, Belgian prosecutors said on Saturday.<\/p>\n
\u201cShe is suspected of spying on behalf of a 3rd country and of being a member of a criminal organisation,\u201d the Federal Public Prosecutor\u2019s Office said in an announcement.<\/p>\n
The girl worked as an intern at NATO\u2019s Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE) within the Belgian city of Mons, the statement said. It didn’t provide further details of her identity or the country or organisation she is suspected of spying for.<\/p>\n

SHAPE is NATO\u2019s top military headquarters, the bottom of Allied Command Operations, which is liable for planning and carrying out all operations of the 32-member transatlantic security alliance.<\/p>\n
The suspect had come to the eye of SHAPE\u2019s security services, who reported her to Belgian intelligence officials, based on the prosecutors\u2019 statement.<\/p>\n

Investigators searched the suspect\u2019s home and her workplace at SHAPE, and she or he was placed under arrest on Friday.<\/p>\n
A SHAPE spokesperson said there was no indication that NATO or SHAPE operational readiness, command and control arrangements or ongoing tasks had been affected.<\/p>\n
\u201cSHAPE continues to fulfil its responsibilities without interruption,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
The prosecutor\u2019s office said it will make no further comment as investigations continued.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
