Anthony Di Marco of the Every day Faceoff joined TSN Radio in Montreal and was asked about why the plan in Detroit failed with Steve Yzerman<\/a> because the General Manager of the Red Wings.<\/p>\n

Host: \u201cWell, let\u2019s dive in a bit of bit here with Steve Yzerman<\/a>, and proper me if I\u2019m not improper. You\u2019ve been very bullish in regards to the job that Yzerman\u2019s been doing, or not doing, in Detroit. And a few years of failure, and it\u2019s hard to maneuver on from such a legendary player once you\u2019re the final manager and president, and now he\u2019s going to be a consultant. It\u2019s like we will\u2019t fire him; we\u2019ll keep him throughout the organization. But it surely wasn\u2019t exactly as planned for Yzerman now that he\u2019s done as GM.\u201d<\/p>\n

Anthony Di Marco: \u201cYeah, I believe my first article I wrote criticizing the Yzerplan was back in December of 2024, after which I criticized them following the deadline of 2025. Then I began to get a bit more optimistic following last season, but then you definately saw them completely fall flat and once more do next to nothing on the trade deadline, other than trading for Justin Faulk<\/a>, who’s a puck-moving power play defenseman. Was a bit of redundant given the incontrovertible fact that you already had Mo Seider not only on the back end but for granted shooting guy on that back end, and I believe you see what they did in free agency and on the draft they did a complete lot of nothing.<\/p>\n

You overpay Victor Arvidsson two years at $5 million per. You trade a former, what was it, 14th overall pick in Sebastian Cosaa for the twenty third overall pick this 12 months to the Utah Mammoth. Just there, it has been a snail\u2019s pace of progression for Steve Yzerman<\/a> and the Detroit Red Wings, and I believe, amateur scouting-wise, led by AGM Kris Draper<\/a>, has done a very nice job, and picking at all times outside the highest three.<\/p>\n

Who Will Replace Steve Yzerman in Detroit as General Manager?<\/a><\/p>\n

Lucas Raymond<\/a>, great pick. Simon Edvinsson, great pick. Moritz Seider<\/a>, great pick. The goaltenders, Cossa and Trey Augustine, great pick, they usually\u2019ve developed well with their AHL team that\u2019s managed by Shawn Horcoff<\/a> done excellently.<\/p>\n

But then you definately have a look at the professional scouting: the blokes that they brought in to type of support these younger pieces, with Andrew Copp<\/a> and Ben Chiarot<\/a>, Justin Holl<\/a>, J.T. Compher<\/a>. Possibly Patrick Kane<\/a> and Alex DeBrincat<\/a> were good adds, but you understand didn\u2019t move the needle all that much.<\/p>\n

You\u2019ve had a rotating solid between the pipes, finally type of solidifying that with John Gibson<\/a> last 12 months, but before that, the likes of Cam Talbot and Ville Husso<\/a> and whatnot. And I just think that eight years in, it is just not ok. Or I suppose seven years in, it has not been ok for the Detroit Red Wings. And eventually, I believe Yzerman\u2019s stubbornness type of landed him here.<\/p>\n

The Timing of the Steve Yzerman Announcement in Detroit is Odd<\/a><\/p>\n

But to your point, Sean, it\u2019s hard to fireside a man like Steve Yzerman. Possibly it was hard for the Canadiens to fireside Bob Gainey<\/a> all those years ago. But I believe this was a quiet, polite, respectful way of claiming, you understand what, you\u2019re not a hockey guy. You\u2019re an advisor, but to the owner, not the team.\u201d<\/p>\n

NHLRumors.com Note:<\/strong> Because the Red Wings proceed to look for his or her general manager, Steve Yzerman\u2019s tenure in Detroit shall be checked out as a failure since the team never reached the playoffs. Detroit took steps backward following a season tied for points with the Washington Capitals in 2024, but missed the playoffs as a result of a standings tiebreaker. But as a substitute of creating progress, the Red Wings took steps backward.<\/p>\n

What’s interesting is that ownership<\/a> didn\u2019t go to Yzerman earlier to suggest that he step down or step up after the season and permit him and his staff to handle the draft and free agency. Considered one of the ultimate straws was his handling of the Dylan Larkin<\/a> trade request, saying there have been no guarantees he could honour the teams he put forth in his request.<\/p>\n

But as we now have mentioned previously, when it got here to Yzerman\u2019s job, it is tough to fireside a Hall of Fame player who has done a lot for the organization. Unfortunately, change was needed in Detroit for the Red Wings to indicate progress. While the AHL is showing progress, the NHL team isn\u2019t, and a few players feel that those within the minors should be up.<\/p>\n

Again, what number of GMs within the NHL get seven years or more to enhance a team and miss the playoffs?<\/p>\n
