U.S. diplomats walked out as their French counterparts were speaking on the United Nations on Monday after\u00a0America\u2019s close European ally\u00a0criticized the Trump administration\u2019s human rights record.<\/p>\n

The surprise move during a U.N. Security Council meeting on Ukraine followed U.S. opposition to giving\u00a0U.N. human rights chief Volker T\u00fcrk\u00a0one other four-year term. The reappointment on Friday got overwhelming support, including from France.<\/p>\n

The U.S. walkout reflects not only the more\u00a0strained relations\u00a0between President Donald Trump and his French counterpart, Emmanuel Macron, but additionally wider\u00a0tensions between the U.S. and Europe. These include questions over Trump\u2019s\u00a0commitment to NATO, possible changes to\u00a0U.S. troop deployments in Europe, and\u00a0Trump\u2019s desire to regulate Greenland,\u00a0which belongs to NATO member Denmark.<\/p>\n

Trump has\u00a0complained that Europeans, who weren\u2019t consulted, didn’t help the U.S. in the course of the Iran war. What sparked the walkout was a social media post Friday from France\u2019s U.N. Mission in Geneva criticizing U.S. opposition to a second term for the U.N. rights chief. The General Assembly voted 144-10 with 13 abstentions in support of T\u00fcrk, with the U.S. among the many \u201cno\u201d votes.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe U.S. was a beacon of human rights. Not anymore. Today, it stands alongside North Korea, Nicaragua, Mali & Russia, isolated. And the world not listens to it,\u201d the French Mission tweeted.<\/p>\n

Mike Waltz, the U.S. ambassador to the U.N., in responding on X, accused France of coddling \u201da number of the worst human rights abusers\u201d and voting \u201cfor somebody who has been lecturing, free, sovereign democracies like the USA, the U.K., and Israel, while cozying as much as the world\u2019s worst oppressors.\u201d<\/p>\n
