French authorities ordered nearly 4,000 more people to evacuate Tuesday from tourist sites on the Atlantic coast as returning heat threatened firefighters\u2019 fragile hold on a\u00a0vast wildfire\u00a0west of Bordeaux. The blaze within the Gironde region has burned an area 4 times the dimensions of Paris and compelled 220,000 people to evacuate.<\/p>\n

Across France and Spain, roughly 330,000 people have been driven from homes and vacation sites by fires of outstanding scale. Spain braced for its fourth heat wave of the summer, with several blazes still uncontrolled, including the most important in its recorded history.<\/p>\n

France may never have seen an evacuation on this scale in peacetime. Interior Minister Laurent Nu\u00f1ez said Saturday it was \u201cvery likely\u201d the most important civilian evacuation operation ever carried out within the country outside war.<\/p>\n

Firefighters held the Gironde blaze in check through a relaxed night,\u00a0bringing flare-ups\u00a0near coastal dunes under control and keeping the burned area unchanged at 420 square kilometers (162 square miles).<\/p>\n
