Ukraine\u2019s drone strike on an Iranian cargo ship within the Caspian Sea last weekend has escalated tensions between the 2 countries and highlighted the growing links between the separate conflicts they\u2019re fighting.<\/p>\n

Iran has vowed to reply to Saturday\u2019s attack, which it said was against a business vessel and killed a sailor. Ukraine claimed the vessel was carrying military equipment between Iran and Russia.<\/p>\n

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha said Tuesday he called his Iranian counterpart Abbas Araghchi for \u201ca frank discussion\u201d and stressed the necessity to \u201cavoid unnecessary escalation.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOur goal is to counter Russian aggression, which is the foundation reason behind all incidents, and it’s Russia who bears full responsibility for all provocations and casualties,\u201d Sybiha wrote on X.<\/a><\/p>\n

Araghchi claimed<\/a> Sybiha told him the strike was \u201cunintentional\u201d but said there \u201cshould be restitution for losses.\u201d<\/p>\n

The decision got here a day after Sybiha, in response to Tehran\u2019s vows of retaliation, said<\/a> Iran had \u201cno standing to pretend to be a victim\u201d while it continues to be \u201ca direct accomplice to Russian aggression against Ukraine.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Institute for the Study of War has made similar assessments<\/a> that Russia helps Iran with goal accuracy, citing U.S. media reports and European officials.<\/p>\n

Zelenskyy on Tuesday met privately with U.S. President Donald Trump while in Washington for the funeral of U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina. The Ukrainian president said on X<\/a> he and Trump discussed Patriot interceptor missile production and restarting peace talks, but didn’t mention if Iran\u2019s alleged assistance was raised.<\/p>\n

U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth last week broadly acknowledged that Russia and China are \u201cenabling some things Iran is doing\u201d in its fight against the U.S.<\/p>\n

On Monday, nevertheless, Trump downplayed any impact the potential Russian assistance was having within the war.<\/p>\n
