Benavidez Sr. Offers To Train Paul For Canelo Fight

Jose Benavidez Sr. says he desires to train Jake Paul for his fight against Canelo Alvarez in May, and he’s not ruling out a win for the favored YouTuber turned-boxer.

Surprisingly, Jose Sr. didn’t sound bitter about Paul being the lucky one that is potentially fighting the superstar Canelo (62-2-2, 39 KO) because he’s been complaining endlessly about his son, ‘The Mexican Monster,’ David Benavidez, not getting the chance to face the superstar.

Revenge Plot?

After all, volunteering to assist Jake will be seen as Benavidez Sr’s technique to get back at Canelo for ignoring his son all these years. Training Paul can be his technique to get even with him while at the identical time getting attention on himself as a well-liked coach. If Paul were to tug off a miracle upset under his watch, it might help raise Jose Sr’s credentials as a coach.

Canelo-Paul still isn’t a done deal yet, but the possibilities of the fight improved today with the news from The Ring about Canelo’s fight with Terence Crawford being off for September. If Alvarez has given up on that mini-mega fight, it increases the possibilities of Jake Paul getting the chance to face Canelo in May and possibly September.

With the type of loot that a fight between Canelo and Jake Paul would rake in, two matches make sense so long as the primary contest is competitive.

“I can be cheering for Jake because I do know Jake, and he’s an excellent person. I’d offer my services to coach him over anything I could do to support him,” said Jose Benavidez Sr. to MillCity Boxing, volunteering to coach Jake Paul to defeat Canelo Alvarez.

“That might be a very good thing. One lucky punch [from Paul] or something. Who knows? We don’t know until we see that. Hopefully, we see the massive progression that Jake is doing. He’s young, and powerful. Anything is feasible once you get inside. I’ll be cheering for him [to defeat Canelo],” said Benavidez Sr.
