Come February 14, and Madhubala’s fans shall have fun the late star’s 92nd birth anniversary. “It’s an especially big day for me and family. The day stands for the celebration of my sister’s timeless charm and sweetness,” says Madhubala’s youngest sister, Madhur Brij Bhushan.

It goes without saying that back within the 50s and 60s, Madhubala ruled the roost along with her incredulous talent and peerless beauty. That’s why, the late superstar and her life has at all times been the centre of attention with plenty of modern-day actors and film-makers. Little doubt then that the announcement of the Madhubala biopic initially of last yr, by Sony Pictures, created tonnes of buzz within the film circles.
There’s been no news on the Madhubala biopic front for the reason that announcement, around March last yr. Ask the late actor’s sister, Madhur about it, and he or she retorts angrily, “We’re in 2025 now. It’s been near two years [since we signed the agreement] and I’m still anxiously waiting for some progress or update, vis-à-vis the beginning date or muhurat of the film.”
Madhur adds, “It’s embarrassing for me to say but I even have no answer [about the status of the film] because I actually have been waiting to listen to from Sony Pictures for past several months. They’ve only given us extremely vague responses till date. That wait is becoming limitless with a frustrating delay from studio’s side.”
Madhur and her team signed the agreement with Sony Pictures in May 2023. “I didn’t expect this from a top film company like Sony,” she says, adding: “We have now sent multiple mails to them [Sony Pictures] but to no avail. I actually sent an in depth mail to them concerning the film but they haven’t bothered to answer to it, till date.”
In actual fact, Madhur, through her legal team, has recently served a legal notice to Sony Pictures. “I used to be left with no option, to be honest. I’m a senior citizen and never getting young, so this limitless wait makes me very unhappy, but I feel extremely helpless. Nonetheless, together with my partners, I plan to do whatever it takes to be sure that the film is made, anyhow,” says Madhur.
As Madhubala’s 92nd birth anniversary draws close, a “disheartened” Madhur says that attributable to “inexplicable” delay from Sony Pictures, her special plans to honour Madhubala’s legacy has been delayed indefinitely.
“I desired to do certain things in my sister’s memory – have her statue installed, do something for an old-age home and music school etc. That is the least I can do for her. But this inordinate delay has thrown all of the plans off course. It’s very disheartening. My easy query [to Sony] is: ‘do you should make the film? Are you even serious concerning the biopic? What’s your plan?’ Please give some clarity. What unsuitable have I done to deserve this treatment,” she says.
Madhur, though, continues to be extremely gung-ho concerning the biopic that will probably be a “true tribute to my iconic sister’s life.” She says, “Madhu aapa had a brilliant successful profession and he or she was a top star but at heart, she at all times remained a family girl, who loved easy things of life. I assume, her immeasurable beauty made up for every little thing that she could have lacked. Since I’m not getting any younger, so, I just hope and pray that the film gets made on the earliest and I can see my long-standing dream coming true in front of my eyes.”
Madhur adds that she, along along with her team, “will do whatever it takes to get the film made anyhow.” She says, “Quite a lot of Madhubala’s fans are eagerly waiting for the film [on my sister’s life]. After I am asked concerning the same, I even have no answer for them. In actual fact, many feel cheated that I promised a movie to them but nothing has happened till date.”
Although Madhubala, as a subject, has at all times attracted attention from plenty of filmmakers and actors. But Madhur insists that nobody, apart from who she and the family authorise, can attempt any film or show etc. on her late sister’s life.
“It’s my humble appeal to everyone to avoid any such stunt [making content on Madhubala’s life]. We won’t let anyone else attempt any such film. It’s mine/ my family’s exclusive emotional right. I just need to tell people to not attempt anything distasteful,” she says, adding, “Dekhiye yeh meri family aur meri emotions se connected hai. Toh meri sirf ek hi request hai ki kucch bhi aisa naa karein jisse rishte kharaab ho, and which is in bad taste.”
Madhur says she has a “humble request” for everybody to “not take pleasure in unnecessary adventurism.” She adds, “I’m making the film with my partners, so kindly don’t are available in between. I, together with my partners, would do every little thing possible — including taking legal steps – to safeguard my family’s interests,” says Madhur, adding that up to now, she and her partners have taken stringent legal motion against a few “mischief makers”. “And, we’d not shrink back from doing the identical if anyone tries to forcefully attempt any film/show on my sister’s life,” she says.
For a few years now, Madhur has gone out of the solution to do her bit to maintain Madhubala’s beautiful legacy alive and take it even further. At this point though, she is “disenchanted” that some articles and stories paint her in a really bad light, without knowing the ‘real truth.’ “It is very upsetting to listen to or examine such inane and unsubstantiated reports and articles,” she says, adding that certain online articles and vlogs have tried to tarnish her image.
“I even have worked extremely hard all my life. I need to ask such people, ‘do you already know me? Have you ever tried to discuss with me? How are you going to say such hurtful things then? Surely, Madhubala was a top star and I’ll all at all times be indebted to her for a number of things but not many know that I even have myself been working since a really young age to make a reputation and profession for myself on the earth of music, dubbing and promoting etc. And I can proudly state that I even have created a successful business alone. That way, I’m also a self-made person,” she says.
