Lego Reveals Sega Genesis Set

Should you’re a Lego aficionado who just so happens to have grown up with a robust love for Sega, this next one is for you. Especially if you happen to’re sufficiently old to have had a Sega Genesis—or Mega Drive, depending in your region—as a household entertainment staple.

Spoilers: I used to be. And, while I’m removed from the world’s biggest Lego fan, I’m still sorely tempted to snag the Sega Genesis 16-bit blast processor (!) in beautifully-rendered blocky form when it goes on sale on the Lego.com store next month.

The Cartridge Is The Masterstroke Here

I believe, if the Lego Sega Genesis set lacked the Sonic the Hedgehog 2 game cartridge, I would not be half as interested. Is that weird? Yeah, probably. But it surely completes the look. And the way lots of us had this thing lodged contained in the slot for weeks on end? I’m more of a Sonic 3 & Knuckles fan (gotta have them attached though; split up, not a lot), but I used to be also extremely young, and terrible at Sonic 2’s Metropolis Zone. So, yeah. This thing was a fixture.

Unfortunately, I do think the controllers look weird on this set. The buttons are bulging out and do not include A/B/C, which is unlucky. I would not get the controller alone, that is obviously. And that is a little bit of a shame, perhaps, because… the controller by itself has actually been out for a few yr.

The Lego Sega Genesis set launches on June 1 for $39.99 USD, which might be just low cost enough for me to justify the expenditure. Meanwhile, the (admittedly much more impressive) Legend of Zelda Deku Tree is… $299.99. So, yeah.
