Jaap Stam has questioned Manchester United’s decision to drop their pursuit of Harry Kane three years ago, insisting the striker was – and stays – ‘the sort of player’ needed to take the club back towards the highest of English football.

United had been long-term admirers of Kane and set their sights on landing the England captain in the summertime of 2023 following Cristiano Ronaldo’s departure midway through the previous campaign.

However the Red Devils subsequently cooled their interest in Kane, with club bosses reportedly reluctant to enter a bidding war which they were confident would have led to failure.

There was also an acceptance at Old Trafford that Kane’s Champions League ambitions were more likely to count against them given other potential suitors across Europe were much better equipped to win the distinguished trophy.

Kane would go on to finish his 19-year stick with Tottenham to finish a record-breaking £95million switch to Bayern Munich, where he has further established himself as some of the lethal attackers in the sport with a rare return of 140 goals and 33 assists in 145 appearances for the club.

Later that very same summer, United wrapped up a £38m take care of Atalanta for Rasmus Hojlund, who flattered to deceive in his first two years in Manchester, before being sent on loan to Napoli last summer.

Three years on and former United defender Stam is ‘still considering’ about what might have been had Kane wound up on the Theatre of Dreams, despite the forward winning a second Bundesliga title with Bayern this season.

‘He was linked to Manchester United once, and we keep excited about that, but we don’t wish to dwell on it anymore,’ Stam told ComeOn.

‘Nevertheless, he’s the sort of player we would have liked to attain goals because, in every aspect, a striker must play like that.’

Kane’s Bayern missed out on a spot on this 12 months’s Champions League final after coming up short on the semi-final stage, with the holders PSG winning 6-5 on aggregate over the 2 legs.

In line with Stam, Bayern’s elimination can have cut deep and Kane will probably be much more hungry so as to add silverware to his collection next season on account of his ‘character’ and ‘personality’.

‘I feel Harry Kane must win a serious trophy as a person. I’ve seen him play so repeatedly now, especially recently, over the past couple of years, even at Bayern. It’s an amazing team, and there’s numerous pressure there,’ he added.

‘When you watch him play, you see how effective he’s, not only scoring goals but additionally dropping deeper, linking up the play, and his high work-rate. I feel he’s an amazing, great skilled.

‘Considering his character and great personality, he really must win a trophy.

‘To me, he looks just like the sort of guy you must see win a trophy due to his attitude and the way he conducts himself inside the team. Yes, for him, it could be very nice.’

United have been tentatively linked with AC Milan winger Rafael Leao in recent months, with the Portuguese’s San Siro future up within the air

In line with La Gazzetta dello Sport, Milan have ‘grown drained’ of waiting for Leao to deliver consistent numbers and may very well be prepared to sell the 26-year-old when the summer transfer window opens for business.

Stam, a member of United’s treble-winning side of 1999, has no doubts about Leao’s ‘potential – but believes the club can have to do their due diligence to find out whether or not he could be the appropriate fit for the dressing room.

‘Possibly a swap between Rafael Leao and Marcus Rashford could work,’ the Dutchman explained.

‘Leao can be player. He has shown his potential at Milan, in fact, in what he can do. I feel he’s a player that must be on the list of targets for Manchester United.

‘Having said that, that you must take a look not only on the skill of a player, but additionally on the mentality of players.

‘That you must consider the situation where the club is, what player they’re bringing in that’s going to assist the club going forward, so that you just don’t get any irritations from players who aren’t being picked to begin.

‘We’ve seen that that may create a sort of a stir inside the dressing room. So that you must have a have a look at the personality of players, at the entire picture, and what’s the most effective player to bring into the club.

‘It feels very exciting to usher in a majority of these players, but you don’t need to take a look at what’s the most effective for immediately, that you must have a look at long-term projects and what’s very vital for the club.’

Undoubtedly some of the notable success stories since Michael Carrick took over the reins on an interim basis has been the resurgence of Kobbie Mainoo, who had effectively been frozen out by Ruben Amorim.

There had even been speculation Mainoo could leave his boyhood team in January, just for the England international to win back his place within the side, before signing a brand new long-term contract on the Theatre of Dreams.

‘Kobbie Mainoo staying will probably be an amazing signing,’ Stam said of the midfielder’s remarkable turnaround.

‘In line with Ruben Amorim, Kobbie Mainoo didn’t slot in his system. There have been talks about him leaving the club, which was, in fact, unthinkable for us as ex-players because we understand how the club acted with young players up to now, what they’ve done with young players, bringing them into the primary team, and hopefully they will show their quality and turn into a first-team regular.

‘I feel that’s what United stands for, helping young players achieve success and having a reference to the academy, after which, in fact, to get that reference to the fans. So, it was unthinkable for us to sell him as a player, but that’s the way it goes in football.

‘If one manager doesn’t just like the player, then persons are considering, ‘Okay, possibly then we’d like to sell him.’ That’s why I feel it’s very vital that the owners and the recruitment staff have their very own ideas about tips on how to construct a club, how they need to achieve success, and whether or not they wish to implement young players. I feel that’s very vital to do.

‘It doesn’t matter which manager is available in, that you must stand for that and tell the manager that that is a vital subject of the club and what they wish to do yearly, every season, if the chance is there with young players, in fact.

‘But now, with Kobbie, you see within the 4-3-3 that Michael Carrick is playing, that he’s very confident in his role. He keeps improving. He’s got the legs. People were worrying, especially with the 2 in the center, “Can he then play box-to-box? Does he have the engine to make all these runs?”‘

On Mainoo, Stam continued: ‘You’ll be able to see now in this method that he’s such player. Technically, he’s so good on the ball. He’s got skills.

‘His positional play is sweet. You’ll be able to see that he can tackle, he can win balls. He’s got a shiny idea about attacking football and giving other players the chance to also get in higher positions.

‘For a young player like that, it’s great that he’s done that. It’s great that he picked that up as well after a really hard period for him. He probably learned rather a lot from that situation, even though it’s not the most effective for him.

‘I’m very comfortable, and I feel everybody inside the club could be very comfortable that he’ll sign a brand new deal.’

United’s hierarchy are expected to prioritise central midfield in the summertime transfer market and a bunch of massive names are rumoured to be targets, from Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson to Newcastle’s Sandro Tonali.

Given the additional games that Champions League qualification will bring next season, Stam feels two latest additions in midfield could also be required to ensure that the club to compete.

‘Everybody talks about replacing Casemiro, who had an amazing season this 12 months and had such an impact,’ the ex-Netherlands international said.

‘He modified his game in comparison with the season before, becoming much fitter, scoring goals, and using his experience to assist other players inside his preferred system.

‘Even when older, experienced players improve once they believe, which I feel is a traditional thing. Nevertheless, that midfield position is one they need to handle.

‘They need to usher in one, or maybe even two, extra midfield players who’ve the legs and the flexibility on the ball to handle the build-up and guide the team alongside Kobbie Mainoo.

‘This might allow Bruno Fernandes to play as a No.10, which could be very vital, as we’ve seen at United. So, everybody is excited about that position.

‘Moreover, when you qualify for the Champions League and have more games to play in a season, your squad must be strengthened. That you must usher in more players, and even higher players, to keep up a certain quality of play.’
