“If he appears like he needs a great fight, I like that because what that’s telling me is he ain’t quite sure of himself because he did 12 good rounds with Makhmudov, right? To some extent where, do you actually need more rounds? That’s what the fans will say. Does he need another? Since it inserts that jeopardy that it could go incorrect,” said Hearn to Sky Sports Boxing.
Hearn pointed to Fury’s recent comments about Joshua’s comeback bout and questioned why the previous heavyweight champion now feels one other outing is crucial.
“He said to us, ‘Oh, you don’t need one other fight. We had 4 rounds with Jake Paul.’ I mean, in two years of boxing, like come on,” said Hearn. “You had 12 rounds with Makhmudov at Tottenham, but you continue to feel like you would like more rounds to organize yourself for Anthony Joshua.”
Fury defeated Arslanbek Makhmudov over 12 rounds in April after coming back from retirement. On the time, many expected him to maneuver directly right into a fight with Joshua. As an alternative, Fury has continued pushing for an additional appearance before the British heavyweight clash.
Hearn doesn’t consider extra rounds will make a difference when Fury eventually shares the ring with Joshua.
“But let me let you know something now. More rounds ain’t going to enable you to because I see it. When Makhmudov got here forward in that fight, I just know what AJ’s going to do.”
The Matchroom promoter said Joshua’s focus stays on Prenga, but admitted a powerful performance next month could send him into the Fury fight with renewed belief after a difficult period outside the ring.
“If we keep this confidence, if we will go in there and put an awesome performance together on July twenty fifth, we go into that Tyson Fury fight with a lot confidence. This might be a significant moment for the game, but July twenty fifth must be first,” said Hearn.
