Jonathan Coachman is once more questioning the connection between Triple H and The Rock, arguing that any public displays of respect between the 2 WWE icons may not tell the complete story.
The talk surrounding Triple H and The Rock’s dynamic has lingered for years, despite each men often speaking positively about each other. Their working relationship was even highlighted in WWE’s Netflix series WWE: Unreal, which portrayed them as professionals who had moved beyond any past tensions.
Nonetheless, Coachman recently claimed that he believes there remains to be underlying friction between the 2.
Speaking on a recent edition of the “2 Count Tuesday” podcast, Coachman said he doesn’t buy into the concept that Triple H and The Rock are as close as they seem. He said,
“Why don’t you’re thinking that, JD, people consider me after I say that Triple H and The Rock, as much as they are saying on Unreal, ‘Oh, we respect one another,’ they don’t. Triple H desires to be what The Rock is.”
Coachman’s co-host JD agreed, suggesting that The Rock could also be reluctant to permit Triple H to receive credit for a few of WWE’s biggest creative successes.
In accordance with Coachman, the foundation of the problem goes far beyond wrestling. He believes Triple H has long harbored aspirations of becoming a significant Hollywood star, just like The Rock. He said,
“Do you understand the opposite reason why there’s a lot this with these two? And I used to be there for this too, JD. I used to be there. I used to be within the room with 10 people. That’s it. Triple H desired to be a movie star. He didn’t make any bones about it.”
Coachman pointed to Triple H’s appearance in Blade: Trinity as evidence of those ambitions, noting that the WWE executive’s goals prolonged beyond the wrestling industry. He continued,
“And when he was in Blade 3, that was his first major movie… That’s what he wanted. And as much as he desires to run the WWE, JD, give it some thought. Rock, John Cena, now Roman, Cody, MJF, they’re all movie stars. There may be a huge jealousy component to this whole thing. I’ll give Triple H his flowers in wrestling. But while you live an extended profession and an extended life, you would like to expand. And he’s never been allowed to try this. So his whole legacy is wrestling. And I consider it eats at him.”
Despite his comments, Coachman stressed that he was not attempting to diminish Triple H’s accomplishments in skilled wrestling, acknowledging the success he has achieved inside the industry. He said,
“And that’s not a criticism of him because I would like to be in movies too. All of us do. It just never happened for him.”
