Gino Reda: “Going into Friday night’s NHL draft, there was loads of talk surrounding Connor Hellebuyck, and what the Winnipeg Jets would do with him. Would they move him through the draft? Would they move him before the draft? But nothing happened there. So now the query becomes, Dregs, what do the Winnipeg Jets do moving forward with Hellebuyck?

What Does Jason Robertson Wish to do? Is an Offer Sheet the Dallas Stars Out?

Dreger: “Well, there’s a few things that should be considered here. Should you’re management, ownership of the Winnipeg Jets, because loads of effort and time was invested in attempting to appease Hellebuyck and move him along.

I mean, the first targets appear to be the Buffalo Sabres, a ton of backwards and forwards between Jarmo Kekalainen and Kevin Cheveldayoff. But ultimately, it seems like the Buffalo Sabres pulled back because they didn’t get comfortable with the package that the Jets commanded to maneuver a future Hall of Famer in Connor Hellebuyck.

So, in fact, there’s time here for teams to revisit the potential for trading Conor Hellebuyck. We’re early into the offseason, but how about this theory? I mean, Cheveldayoff continues to have trade conversations with players, with defensemen, with forwards. Could it bolster their lineup to some extent where they return to Hellebuyck and say, ‘All right, our roster is best. Does this modification your mind? Are you thinking about staying?’

So, there are a few things being considered here.”

“And the ultimate one is Connor Hellebuyck. Depending on who you speak to yesterday, there have been individuals who thought that a deal between Winnipeg and Buffalo was close. And Hellebuyck agreed to go to Buffalo.

Now, obviously, it wasn’t to the satisfaction of the Winnipeg Jets, who really need to attempt to hit a house run with this deal. But there was a time yesterday where people thought this was going to occur.

NHL Rumors: Connor Hellebuyck and Matthew Knies

Buffalo decided the value was too high. I believe the challenge now for loads of these trades is, it’s not a first-round pick within the immediate draft which you can do anymore. Any draft picks you’re doing for first-rounders aren’t until next yr. Let’s see how that changes the landscape.
