C.J. Stroud has made his stance on a possible extension known this offseason, the primary by which he can sign a long-term deal. It increasingly seems as if the Texans are prepared to attend, though.
A recent report confirmed team and player should not near an extension agreement right away. It is probably going that may remain the case in the meanwhile. During a recent NFL Live appearance, ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler noted (video link) talks between Stroud and the Texans are “essentially on pause” in the intervening time.
Houston made the plain selection of exercising Stroud’s fifth-year option this spring. That move ensured he’ll remain under team control through not less than 2027. With loads of time remaining before a second contract must be finalized – and the potential of the franchise tag being in play – a patient approach on the Texans’ part could be easy to grasp. Using 2026 as an evaluation period could give either side further clarity for every time a brand new round of negotiations happen.
Stroud enjoyed among the best rookie seasons in NFL history in the course of the 2023 campaign. The previous No. 2 pick helped lead his team to the divisional round of the playoffs that 12 months, a feat which has been repeated twice since then. Stroud’s playoff showings have increasingly develop into the topic of scrutiny, nonetheless. He committed seven turnovers in two postseason contests in 2025, largely undoing the work of an elite defense.
The Texans have been willing to make quite a few big-money commitments on that side of the ball. Pass rusher Will Anderson (chosen one pick after Stroud) also had his fifth-year option picked up, but he has since received a market-setting extension. The likes of Danielle Hunter and Azeez Al-Shaair have finalized lucrative recent Houston deals of their very own this offseason.
There may be after all still time for Stroud, 24, to hitch that list prior to Week 1. As things stand, though, the possibilities of a deal being worked out in time for the beginning of the approaching season are decreasing.
