John Garza was set to compete in his first title fight before receiving late notice UFC call

It was reported at the beginning of fight week that John Garza can be stepping in to face Farid Basharat at bantamweight this Saturday.

With a 6-1 pro record, it’s unlikely that anyone who doesn’t follow the regional MMA scene can be acquainted with the 23-year-old, but that every one changes on July 11.

‘Mowgli’ made his skilled debut in 2024 following a ten-fight amateur profession where he went 7-3.

He’s produced three finishes in his last 4 fights, all of which have taken place in Fury FC, with him earning the promotion’s Performance of the Night award in January.

Garza’s second-round knock out over Josh Walker led to him being lined as much as challenge Fury’s bantamweight champion, Abdul Kamara, in August.

As a substitute, he’ll be taking over the 15-0 Farid Basharat, who said Ethyn Ewing dodged a bullet by withdrawing from their UFC 329 matchup.

The gap in experience between them, especially at a high level, is evident to see, but that doesn’t mean Garza must be written off entirely.

Garza has been described (by the likes of Shawn Bitter and Patrick Danna on X) as a “legit” and “nasty striker” who could turn out to be a “fun prospect” at bantamweight along with his “really slick boxing”.
