Paulie Malignaggi isn’t actively campaigning for one more fight with Adrien Broner, but he admits the concept keeps finding its way back to him greater than a decade after their original title fight.
The previous two-division world champion said fans continuously ask him about facing Broner again, especially now that streaming platforms have created a thriving marketplace for veteran boxing matchups. Although he stopped in need of saying the fight will occur, Malignaggi made it clear he hasn’t completely ruled it out.
“To reply your query, am I serious about the fight? It’s weird because within the streaming era that we’re in now, it’s suddenly grow to be popular again,” said Malignaggi to Fighthype. “This fight gets talked about lots. You’re not the primary person asking me about it. I don’t know if anybody’s asking Adrien about it, but from my end, I’m getting asked about it lots. I get DM’d about it. I get comments on my Instagram about it.”
Broner defeated Malignaggi by split decision in June 2013 to capture the WBA welterweight title in certainly one of Showtime’s biggest events of that era. Their rivalry prolonged well beyond fight night, fueled by months of private insults and memorable trash talk.
Looking back, Malignaggi believes that history still gives the matchup value today.
“With streaming, there’s a fan base that actually tunes into these fights. Me and Broner wouldn’t just be streamers,” said Malignaggi. “Broner isn’t only a streamer, but there’s actually a championship element to him, even when he’s past his prime, and even when I’m past my prime. You would revive lots of that. Me and Broner were the very best trash talkers of our generation, hands down. You’ve got to be witty to be a trash talker.”
At 45, Malignaggi recently competed in bare-knuckle boxing but indicated he’s unlikely to proceed there due to grappling element under those rules. A return to traditional boxing against a well-known rival, nonetheless, stays a distinct conversation.
Broner’s interest within the matchup stays unknown. Malignaggi admitted he has no idea if Broner gets hit with the identical questions, but from his own perspective, fan interest has stayed surprisingly strong all these years later.
