The Buccaneers enjoyed pristine safety health within the 2025 season, but that didn’t stop them from making a move to make sure they’re necessarily stocked on the position. In line with ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Tampa Bay has agreed to a one-year deal with former Lions and Dolphins safety Ifeatu Melifonwu.
A former cornerback at Syracuse taken within the third round in 2020, the versatile Melifonwu found his way onto the sector early as a rookie but suffered an injury that may force him to miss nine weeks in a row after his first profession start. Capable of return to the sector by the tip season, Melifonwu was capable of put a powerful finish on his rookie campaign in his final three starts.
As injuries continued to hamper him, the Lions slow-played Melifonwu in his sophomore season, but he found his way back to a much bigger role in Yr 3. Playing in all 17 games for the primary time in his profession, Melifonwu lit up the stat sheet, logging profession highs in interceptions (2), passes defensed (8), sacks (3.0), tackles for loss (4), and quarterback hits (5). Melifonwu’s injury woes returned in the ultimate 12 months of his rookie deal, holding him out of the primary 14 games of the season, but he began the ultimate three games of the season before hitting the free agent market.
Melifonwu signed a one-year, $4MM contract to affix the Dolphins last 12 months and immediately became a contender for a starting job. Ultimately, he began half of the 16 games he played for Miami. He didn’t prove to be quite as effective as he was during his time in Detroit, but Melifonwu showed he could stay healthy and return to the versatile defensive role that sees him playing at deep safety, within the box, and within the slot.
In a fairly busy 12 months for safeties in free agency, Melifonwu flew far under the radar for much of the offseason. He didn’t receive any interest from teams until getting called out for a workout with the Seahawks in early June. He followed that trip up with an audition for the Titans but, once more, left with no deal in place. Now Melifonwu lands with the Bucs, who’ve enjoyed utilizing a trio of roaming safeties ceaselessly prior to now few seasons. He’ll team up with Antoine Winfield Jr. and Tykee Smith in Tampa Bay’s secondary next 12 months.
