Despite having a few of the most lethal hands in boxing, Savannah Marshall has eyes on showing a special skillset when she makes her MMA debut.
The undisputed super-middleweight champion has made the swap to the cage so as to pursue an eventual rematch with Claressa Shields under the PFL banner. And she is going to make her debut against Mirela Vargas on June 8 in a large hometown show in Newcastle.

Marshall believes that she is working with top-of-the-line in the game, telling Bloody Elbow in an exclusive chat that they met during his days juggling the 2 sports. “After I was with Peter in 2017, Tom was with him as well,” she explained.
“I believe he had one boxing fight and on the time he was saying he was going to go away boxing behind to deal with MMA. But then through the years he’d are available in to spar and we at all times saw Andy [Aspinall; his dad] and after I had this chance to modify to the dark side I messaged them.
“I asked if I could go and do a bit of coaching they usually were like ‘yeah, in fact you may,’. Their’s is a heavyweight gym so that they’ve needed to bring a load of smaller people for me! There’s one or two girls in there but then there’s lads my size.
“I realize it’s different training with lads but I’m doing lots of tech rounds. I’m joining in on the beginner classes and asking probably the most basic of questions, nevertheless it’s great because I’m with a terrific, patient, group of individuals.”

After years of domination within the boxing ring which has seen her earn world titles at two different weights, Savannah Marshall has embraced being a beginner again. She has began from the bottom up and been submitted multiple times an evening as she learns find out how to fight with a mix of martial arts.
And now, she’s keen to point out off the abilities she has learned should the fight get to the bottom. “The plan is to get a knockout before we get to the bottom,” Marshall admitted.
“But I even have been working hard and to be honest if the chance is there I’d like to take someone down and get a submission in. I actually would, It’s what I’ve been training for, I’ve boxed, punched all of my life and I need to spice it up a bit.”

Marshall admits that she has struggled attending to grips with the grappling aspect of MMA. She feels it’s even harder than she expected, adding: “It’s really hard, I massively underestimated it because I never really watched MMA.
“I’d watch the massive fights for Conor McGregor, Tom, Molly McCann. But especially once they got on the ground I’d watch and think ‘what a load of rubbish’! But now I do know what I’m watching, wow. What a sport, what an art.
“Anyone who does MMA, hats off to them since it’s just so tough. They asked me to do that about 4 months ago and I used to be considering ‘when will you ever be ready for an MMA fight?’ Because there may be a lot to learn.
“There’s a lot to recollect and even on the ground with BJJ there’s so many various moves, you set yourself in position and also you’re wide open for this and that, and even in your feet.
“So I remember considering I had to only go for it because otherwise you’d never do it. But once I began watching the game properly and learned it, I gained a lot respect for it.”
