Vijay Thalapathy-starrer Jana Nayagan has been making headlines for several months. Earlier this month, the film was leaked online in HD print, resulting in multiple arrests in reference to the case. Thus far, around 10 individuals have been detained, including a contract editor believed to be the most important accused behind the leak. Now, police have arrested one other person, this time, a CCTV staff member working at a vote-counting centre, on charges of illegally downloading and viewing the film.
CCTV Technician Arrested For Watching Vijay Thalapathy Led-Jana Nayagan
The newest arrest involves a CCTV technical head at Anna University, which functions as a vote-counting centre. The person, identified as T Yuvraj, was reportedly recruited through the Election Commission on a contractual basis. During duty hours, he allegedly downloaded Jana Nayagan and was caught watching it illegally on his laptop. In line with reports from The Hindu, he even took a photograph of himself watching the film and posted it on his Facebook account around 11 PM on April 23. The photo shows multiple CCTV screens within the background.
The post soon went viral, sparking controversy. Yuvraj was caught contained in the CCTV control room at a vote-counting centre in Chennai, illegally viewing the film. After the completion of the Assembly elections voting on April 23, EVMs from areas including Saidapet, Virugambakkam, Velachery, T Nagar, and Mylapore were stored securely in three strong rooms across Chennai, including one at Anna University.
An IT official from the Greater Chennai Corporation filed a police grievance regarding the Facebook post, which ultimately led to Yuvraj’s arrest. In line with NDTV, authorities are investigating how he accessed the film. Throughout the probe, police reportedly found that he had watched Jana Nayagan contained in the centre before the EVMs were moved into the secured rooms post-voting.
Jana Nayagan Leak
Jana Nayagan is Vijay’s final film before he entered politics together with his party TVK. It was initially scheduled for release in January during Pongal celebrations. Nevertheless, the discharge was indefinitely postponed on account of delays in receiving CBFC certification. Despite legal efforts by KVN Productions, the film remained without certification. Before a brand new release date might be announced, it was leaked online in HD print on April 9.
Thus far, police have arrested ten individuals connected to the leak. Amongst them, a contract editor working on one other project is being considered the first accused. He has recently applied for bail. Moreover, a cable TV operator was detained for illegally broadcasting the film. The arrest of the CCTV technician marks the eleventh person taken into custody on this case. Earlier, the film’s editor was suspended from the Editors’ Association for negligence, despite not being directly involved within the leak.
