In a spectacular display of batting firepower, the Mumbai Indians (MI) pulled off their highest-ever successful run-chase in IPL history, defeating the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) by six wickets on the Wankhede Stadium on Monday, May 4.

Chasing a mammoth goal of 229, Mumbai’s top order turned a frightening task right into a clinical finish, crossing the road with eight balls to spare and keeping their playoff hopes alive. The evening began with Mumbai Indians winning the toss and electing to bowl first.

The Lucknow Super Giants took full advantage of the batting-friendly conditions, led by a panoramic innings from Nicholas Pooran. Pooran dismantled the MI attack, smashing 63 off just 21 balls, including eight towering sixes. He shared a blistering 94-run partnership with Mitchell Marsh, who contributed a gentle 44 off 25 deliveries.

Late cameos from Himmat Singh (40)* and Aiden Markram (31)* propelled LSG to a formidable total of 228/5. For Mumbai, Corbin Bosch was the pick of the bowlers, taking 2/20 in an important middle-overs spell that prevented LSG from crossing the 250-mark.

Rohit Sharma & Rickelton Star in Mumbai’s Record Opening Stand

Mumbai’s response was headlined by the emotional and explosive return of Rohit Sharma. Opening alongside Ryan Rickelton, the duo dismantled the LSG bowling attack with a record-breaking 143-run opening stand in only 10.5 overs.

Rickelton was in devastating form, bludgeoning 83 off 32 balls, featuring six boundaries and eight sixes at a strike rate of 259.38. On the opposite end, Rohit Sharma looked like he had never been away, scoring a sublime 84 off 44 balls, including seven sixes and 6 fours.

Despite a temporary middle-order wobble where Suryakumar Yadav (12) and Tilak Varma (11) fell relatively cheaply, the platform set by the openers was too strong to beat. Naman Dhir provided late stability with an unbeaten 23 off 12 balls, and Will Jacks finished the sport in style with a six to take MI to 229/4 in 18.4 overs.

Ryan Rickelton was named the Player of the Match for his explosive knock that set the tone for this historic chase. For Lucknow, it was an evening to forget for the bowlers, with Manimaran Siddharth being the one multi-wicket taker, ending with 2/47.
