Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) reclaimed their dominance in IPL 2026 with a commanding 33-run victory over the Punjab Kings (PBKS) on the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium on Wednesday, May 6. In a match defined by heavy hitting, SRH posted an enormous 235/4, successfully defending it to dethrone Punjab from the highest of the points table.
After being put in to bat, SRH’s openers set a blistering tone. Abhishek Sharma and Travis Headdecimated the PBKS attack, racing to 54 runs in only 3.2 overs. Abhishek played a lightning cameo of 35 off 13 ballsbefore falling to Lockie Ferguson.
Travis Head continued the assault with a rapid 38 off 19 balls (3 fours, 3 sixes) until he was dismissed by a clever googly from Yuzvendra Chahal. The center order then capitalized on a sloppy fielding performance from Punjab, who dropped multiple catches.
Ishan Kishan and Heinrich Klaasen stitched together a match-defining 88-run partnership. Kishan struck a solid 55 off 32 balls, while Klaasen top-scored with an explosive 69 off 43 deliveries, featuring three fours and 4 sixes. A late flourish from Nitish Kumar Reddy (29 off 13 balls)* ensured SRH reached their towering total of 235.

PBKS Collapse Early Despite Connolly’s Unbeaten Ton
In response, Punjab Kings’ chase got off to a disastrous start. Captain Pat Cummins struck early, dismissing Priyansh Arya for 1 in the primary over. PBKS soon found themselves reeling at 23/3 as Prabhsimran Singh (3)and captain Shreyas Iyer (5) fell cheaply.
While the highest order crumbled, 22-year-old Cooper Connolly played a lone, heroic hand. Connolly struck his maiden T20 century, smashing an unbeaten 107 off 59 balls* with seven boundaries and eight sixes.
Despite Connolly’s brilliance, lack of support from the opposite end, with Marcus Stoinis (28) and Suryansh Shedge (25) failing to convert starts, meant Punjab finished at 202/7. Pat Cummins led from the front with the ball, ending with figures of 2/34, while Shivang Kumar also claimed two wickets.
With this win, SRH moves to 14 points, officially taking the lead within the IPL 2026 standings.
