Chris Billam-Smith overcame a determined challenge from Ryan Rozicki to attain a stoppage victory of their cruiserweight essential event on Saturday night on the Bournemouth International Centre in Dorset, Bournemouth, England.
The competition served because the headline attraction for Zuffa Boxing’s first event in the UK and delivered the physical, hard-fought battle many expected.
The competition was fought largely at close quarters and included several clashes of heads. Rozicki suffered cuts over each eyes because the rounds progressed.
Billam-Smith found increasing success throughout the second half of the fight and finished the seventh round strongly.
Neither fighter gave much ground throughout the opening half of the fight, but Billam-Smith increasingly found success together with his cleaner punches and better work rate.
By the seventh round, the previous world champion gave the impression to be taking control. Billam-Smith landed several sharp combos and repeatedly connected with clean shots as Rozicki continued to march forward.
The sustained attack took its toll.
After a difficult seventh round, Rozicki was unable to proceed, bringing an end to the competition and handing Billam-Smith a stoppage victory. The official result went into the books as a seventh-round TKO.
The win improved Billam-Smith’s record to 22-2 with 14 knockouts and provided one other significant victory in front of his hometown supporters.
For Rozicki, the defeat ended a brave effort through which he remained dangerous throughout but was ultimately worn down by Billam-Smith’s volume, accuracy and persistence.
The victory keeps Billam-Smith firmly within the conversation for major cruiserweight fights moving forward as he continues his pursuit of one other world title opportunity.
