Former India player turned commentator Cheteshwar Pujara has applauded Yashasvi Jaiswal for living as much as the team management’s expectations by playing a match-winning knock within the third ODI against Afghanistan as well. He added that the opener’s century might put a bit of pressure on Rohit Sharma, although he scored a 69-ball 79 in the identical game as well.
Nevertheless, India bowled out Afghanistan for 218 in the ultimate match of the three-match series in Chennai on Saturday, June 20 as well. Jaiswal scored an unbeaten 110 off 86 balls within the chase as India sealed a 3-0 series win by achieving the goal with nine wickets and 21.2 overs in hand.
During a discussion on JioHotstar, Pujara said, “There was an expectation from him to attain runs since the team management backed him by keeping him an element of the playing XI on this match. He proved why the team management showed confidence in him. He brought improvement within the shot he got out to within the previous match. His style looks different once he gets set.”
“There is no such thing as a comparison between Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi because Rohit also scored runs today (Saturday). Nevertheless, any senior player feels the pressure, and he’s creating slight pressure on Rohit Sharma. It’s healthy competition for the Indian team. Rohit and Virat (Kohli) are great players, and so they aren’t compared with any young player, but this team is preparing replacements for the long run,” he again added.
“He knows the template to attain 100” – Piyush Chawla on Yashasvi Jaiswal
Nevertheless, former India spinner Piyush Chawla applauded Yashasvi Jaiswal for learning from his last game’s mistake and
ensuring that he didn’t play aerial cut shots as well.
“He needed to play such a knock because Shubman Gill himself went to No. 3 to provide Yashasvi Jaiswal a probability to open. He got out while attempting to cut within the previous match. At any time when he played the cut today, he rolled his wrists and kept the ball down. It shows his mentality that he had to attain big runs,” he said.
“We have now seen it persistently earlier as well that after he gets set, only big runs come from his bat, and he gave an example of that after again. He knows the template to attain 100. He placed a price tag on his wicket. He knew how essential this knock was,” Chawla concluded.
