K Bhagyaraj’s Death: TN CM Vijay, R Madhavan, Chiranjeevi Pay Last Respects

Veteran Tamil actor, director and screenwriter K Bhagyaraj passed away this morning in Chennai after suffering a cardiac arrest at 73. The veteran filmmaker’s death has got here as a shock to the Tamil film industry, and several other personalities, including Chiranjeevi, R Madhavan and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay, are mourning his demise. While the TN CM visited the deceased’s family, the recently confered Padma winners took to social media and paid emotional tributes.

TN CM Vijay Meets K Bhagyaraj’s Family Post His Death

As per a video now circulating on social media, K Bhagyaraj’s mortal stays were dropped at his residence in Chennai. Some time later, Tamil Nadu CM Vijay visited the filmmaker’s home to pay his last respects. Here he was seen consoling Bhagyaraj’s son, actor Shanthanu Bhagyaraj, who was visibly devastated and broke down in tears. Vijay was captured hugged him. The CM was later seen comforting Bhagyaraj’s wife, Poornima.

The actor-turned-CM took to X (formerly Twitter) and paid tribute to Bhagyaraj’s decades-long contribution to cinema. While describing his death as an “irreplaceable loss” to Tamil cinema, Vijay announced that Bhagyaraj could be accorded state honours. He tweeted in Tamil, “Upon learning of the passing of Thiru K. Bhagyaraj, the pre-eminent director, actor, screenwriter, dialogue author and music composer of Tamil cinema, who left an indelible mark through his multifaceted talents, I’m crammed with profound shock and deep sorrow.”

Vijay’s post further read, “Through movies that reflect unique storytelling, humour-infused performances, and the profound emotions of rural life and family relationships, Thiru K. Bhagyaraj has carved an everlasting place within the hearts of the Tamil people. His contributions to the Tamil film industry are immeasurable. Each of his creations will endure endlessly as timeless memories that entertain while chatting with humanity and social values.”

He added, “His demise is an irreplaceable loss to Tamil cinema. I convey my deepest condolences and sympathies to his grieving family, relatives, friends, members of the film fraternity and fans. I pray that his soul rests in peace on the divine feet of the Lord. In tribute to Thiru K. Bhagyaraj’s contributions to the film industry and as a mark of respect, state honours might be accorded during his final journey.”

R Madhavan, Chiranjeevi Pay Their Respects

Chiranjeevi also took to X and shared an emotional note. His tweet read, “Deeply shocked and heartbroken beyond words. Just the day before yesterday, we were together in Goa at Kush’s wedding, laughing, sharing jokes, and taking pictures. Bhagyaraj garu was energetic and joy. To wake as much as the news of his passing this morning is just unbelievable.”

He further added, “An excellent filmmaker, exceptional screenplay author, and high quality actor, his contribution to Indian cinema will all the time be remembered. My heartfelt condolences to Poornima ji, Shanthanu and the whole family. May God give them the strength to bear this irreparable loss. Rest in peace, my dear friend. You might be deeply missed.”

R Madhavan took to Instagram and paid tribute to the late director. He wrote, “One in all the best screenplay writers and an exquisite human being, stuffed with kindness. He might be so missed by all. Rest in peace, sir.”

Born Krishnaswamy Bhagyaraj, K Bhagyaraj was widely thought to be the ‘King of Screenplay’ for redefining mainstream Tamil cinema with relatable middle-class protagonists, witty dialogue and emotionally engaging narratives. He stepped into the industry when he directed Suvarillatha Chithirangal in 1979. A few of his best known movies include Andha 7 Naatkal (1981), Mundhanai Mudichu (1983), Chinna Veedu (1985) and Enga Chinna Rasa (1987). The success of Enga Chinna Rasa inspired several remakes across Indian cinema, including the Hindi blockbuster Beta.
