VIVANT WATER has begun supplying desalinated water from its seawater desalination plant in Cordova, Cebu, to the Metropolitan Cebu Water District (MCWD), providing an initial supply that can serve nearly 7,000 households ahead of the power’s full business operations.
MCWD’s distribution network has began receiving an initial 5,000 cubic meters (cu.m.) of desalinated water from Isla Mactan Cordova Corp., a subsidiary of Vivant Water.
“The earlier we bring climate-resilient sources online, the earlier we can assist reduce stress on our aquifers and protect the natural resources that Cebu’s future is determined by,” Vivant Water President Jess Anthony Garcia said in a press release on Thursday.
Vivant Water and MCWD signed a 25-year three way partnership agreement in April 2025 to produce as much as 20,000 cu.m. of desalinated water per day to Metro Cebu.
Once fully operational, the desalination plant is anticipated to produce enough water to serve nearly 30,000 households.
Vivant Water said the power provides another water source since it doesn’t depend on groundwater or surface water, supporting Cebu’s long-term water security as demand grows.
Vivant Water, officially often known as Vivant Infracore Holdings, Inc., manages the water investments of Cebu-based conglomerate Vivant Corp.
At the corporate’s annual stockholders’ meeting in May, Vivant Chief Executive Officer Arlo G. Sarmiento said the corporate plans to spend about P67 billion on its energy and water businesses through 2030.
About P60 billion has been allocated to expand energy infrastructure, while the remaining budget will likely be used to grow Vivant’s portfolio across the water value chain.
“I’m confident that our projected P60-70 billion in pipeline investments over the following five years will allow us to proceed to deliver on our mission to bring excellence to industries that improve on a regular basis living,” Mr. Sarmiento said. — Sheldeen Joy Talavera
