The Toronto Maple Leafs want value in return for Morgan Rielly
It has been an offseason of change for the Toronto Maple Leafs. Recent General Manager John Chayka is putting his stamp on the team. While he isn’t overcorrecting from the previous administration’s mistakes, Chayka is bringing his analytical models and considering from Arizona to Toronto.
Where are things at with Morgan Rielly and the Toronto Maple Leafs
This can be a different-looking Maple Leafs team next season. Some familiar faces are not any longer on the team. Will considered one of those familiar faces and a staple of the Maple Leafs defence, Morgan Rielly, remain on the club when the season starts?
Dave Pagnotta, on TFP Hotstove on SiriusXM NHL Network Radio with Ryan Paton and Dennis Bernstein, within the Saturday, July 4th edition, discussed the likelihood of the Toronto Maple Leafs trading defenseman Morgan Rielly this summer or sometime through the season.

Ryan Paton “… but Morgan Rielly, is he, is that name still sort of floating out? I feel it needs to be right.”
Dave Pagnotta: “Yep, that I mean, I used to be told it’s a matter of when, not if. Now, the issue with the when not if is no one really knows when. There’s no timeline since the Leafs aren’t giving him away. They’ve made that clear, it’s a trade. They’re gonna get some style of asset back, as they need to, but they’re not freeing up $7.5 million, which is his cap it, so we’ll see.
We’ll see when this happens, and the way they piece this together. There’s also some belief that Max Domi will start the season on LTIR. In order that’ll give them just a little flexibility, but (Chris Tanev) is healthy. We talked at (Jim) Hiller’s introductory press conference, John Chayka, their GM, said Tanev could play tomorrow if we had a game, so we’ll see how they proceed to navigate these waters.”

It seems like a change of scenery could do Rielly some good, as you hope it would for Darnell Nurse, moving from Edmonton to San Jose. Again, the Maple Leafs usually are not just trying to dump his cap hit because the Oilers did with Nurse. For those who move a player like Rielly, you wish assets in return. Can they get this deal done before the season starts, or will this carry on into the season?
Whether it is a when-not-if scenario, you’d think Morgan Rielly isn’t on the Maple Leafs when the season starts. Only time will tell.”
