Lil Durk Avoids Latest RICO Charges—For Now

According to recent court filings, Lil Durk’s defense team, including high-profile attorneys Brian Steel and Drew Findling, successfully argued to have two recently added RICO charges excluded from his upcoming federal trial. The court issued the ruling just weeks before jury selection begins on August 20.

The presiding judge within the case, Michael Fitzgerald, ordered that the 2 RICO charges—added to the indictment in June—be severed from the present case and tried at a later date. While the choice removes those allegations from the upcoming trial, it doesn’t dismiss them entirely. Durk could still face those RICO charges in future proceedings. Despite the ruling, the Chicago rapper remains to be facing several serious federal charges, including one count of murder-for-hire, one count of murder-for-hire leading to death, and use and/or possession of a firearm in furtherance of against the law of violence leading to death.

The Case Against Lil Durk Explained

As previously reported, federal prosecutors allege that the costs stem from an alleged murder-for-hire plot targeting rapper Quando Rondo. Authorities claim the alleged plot targeted Quando Rondo and led to the 2022 shooting that killed his cousin, Saviay’a Robinson, after gunfire erupted near a Los Angeles gas station. Prosecutors have maintained that Durk played a job in orchestrating the alleged retaliation, while his legal team has continued to disclaim the allegations and ward off against the federal government’s case.

The newest ruling is viewed as a procedural victory for Durk’s defense, because it narrows the problems jurors will consider during next month’s trial. By separating the newly added RICO allegations from the present indictment, the court allows either side to deal with the costs that were already pending, quite than introducing additional racketeering claims just weeks before trial. Durk stays in federal custody as he awaits the beginning of proceedings, and the consequence of the August trial could determine whether prosecutors move forward with the severed RICO counts at a later date.
