Detroit Red Wings Open to Any Front Office Structure

How will the Detroit Red Wings structure their front office?

Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman was on NHL Tonight on NHL Network to debate how the Detroit Red Wings will proceed after Steve Yzerman steps down as the overall manager. Could they stick to a one person in charge or go to a two-tier system?

Who Will Replace Steve Yzerman in Detroit as General Manager?

Billy Jaffe: “Now back to hockey in Detroit. So what’s next? I mean, I understand it’s so early, but what’s next for this team? They’ve got a pair of men in-house. There’s a number of guys which might be on the surface, perhaps. I do know plenty of guys would have an interest, but does it feel to you want they type of stay in-house, or do they go outside the organization? It feels to me like they perhaps go outside first.”

Elliotte Friedman: “ what, Billy? I believe, to begin with, we’re still, as you said, very early on this process. This just happened , and it’s taken plenty of people by surprise. However the one thing that I’ve heard is that the Red Wings are going into this with an open mind, that they may solid a large net, and they’ll give their internal candidates. You’re talking about people like Kris Draper and Shawn Horcoff. They’ll give them the opportunities, but also they are going to go outside.

They’ll go into this with no preconceived notions, they usually go into this with the the opposite thing I used to be wondering, and I used to be asking this so much , Billy, is do they do a one-person structure like Yzerman was, where one person is the president and the overall manager, or do they go to a two-person structure where there’s a president and there’s a unique general manager?

The Timing of the Steve Yzerman Announcement in Detroit is Odd

And I’ve heard the Red Wings are open to all types of ideas. As they may listen, they may hear what people need to say, and they’ll zero in ultimately, at the top of the day, on who the fitting person or persons are, and construct the structure around that. It’s type of like what Nashville did until they found the fitting person.

Then they went out, they usually said, “We’re going to construct the structure around that. I believe that’s what they’re going to do. But that’s the thing I’ve been told: they’ve an open mind, each internally and externally, as to who they may discuss with, and where I actually agree with you is I believe this will likely be a coveted job.

I do know the Red Wings haven’t had plenty of success in the previous few years, but these are still the Detroit Red Wings. They’ve probably the most beautiful arenas within the league. They’ve resources. I believe there will likely be a ton of interest.

NHL News: Yzerman out of GM, Devils sign Mantha, and a number of other signings

We mentioned Horcoff and Draper on the within. You’re going to listen to plenty of names, like hey, Brendan Shanahan. That’s one in every of the primary people I believed of who left Toronto in a greater place than he found it. But I believe there’s going to be so much, and I believe they’ll go on the market, they’re going to discuss with a bunch of individuals. They’ll determine who they like, after which they may determine how the structure goes to be built around them.”

NHLRumors.com Note: As previously mentioned, the most effective idea for the Red Wings is to look outside the organization and find someone not tied to it. The usual suspects will likely be mentioned, like Shanahan, Horcoff, Ryan Martin, Marc Bergevin, and potentially a reunion with Jim Nill, but it surely might make sense to offer someone like Evan Gold, Brett Petersen, Darren Yorke, Sam Ventura, Brandon Pridham, Josh Flynn, or Tim Barnes.
