NHL Rumors: Now What for Dylan Larkin and the Detroit Red Wings?
Host: “We speak about all these potential UFAs coming up. I’ve spent all the summer reading about (Connor) Hellebuyck and (Dylan) Larkin. Is that this going to occur this summer, or are they going to find yourself fiddling with their teams and being moved mid-season?”
Anthony Di Marco: “The Larkin one, I feel, is more complicated due to Steve Yzerman stepping down from his role last week. And I thoroughly consider, and speaking with one general manager within the NHL last week, that this was partially on Detroit’s angle to try to get Larkin to remain, and if it’s to not get Larkin to remain, at the least make the method somewhat smoother.
Since you heard what Detroit was asking from teams like Dallas: they need Wyatt Johnston, or they need Matt Boldy from the Minnesota Wild. Like, that could be a very unrealistic ask should you’re Steve Yzerman because why would you trade a Johnston or a Boldy for a soon-to-be 30-year-old Dylan Larkin, who at this time limit might be a worse player than either of those two guys? So I feel that one may drag out somewhat bit.
Can the Buffalo Sabres pull off a Connor Hellebuyck trade?
As for Connor Hellebuyck, I mean we’ve been hearing about him going to Buffalo for quite a while. He would waive his no-movement clause to go to Buffalo. Was the last time you heard that? But it surely would make a variety of sense. I feel it might make sense on the draft if Buffalo could have parlayed that fourth overall pick that they got from Chicago for Bowen Byram as a part of a package to get Hellebuyck.
So if I were a betting man, I feel that Hellebuyck can be moved earlier than Larkin just due to the management change we’re seeing right away happening in Detroit.
NHLRumors.com Note: The Dylan Larkin saga may very well be placed on pause for some time until the Detroit Red Wings work out their next general manager. Straight away, that’s the million-dollar query surrounding Larkin and the Wings. Given the changes in Detroit, could there be a solution to salvage the connection?
NHL Rumors: Detroit Red Wings Open to Any Front Office Structure
As for Connor Hellebuyck in Winnipeg, if he desires to go to Buffalo, he still can, however the players that were a part of the initial deal on the 2026 NHL Draft would want to waive their trade clauses to go to Winnipeg. But Buffalo is sensible for Hellebuyck because the Sabres need to take the following step.
Nonetheless, each the Winnipeg Jets and Detroit Red Wings are asking a fairly penny for his or her star players. This might take a bit, however the sense is that Hellebuyck could get done before Larkin.
