The Bachelor’s Sean Lowe has broken his silence on his son’s type 1 diabetes diagnosis.
“[It’s] been loads to process,” Lowe, 42, said in an Instagram video on Thursday, July 23, revealing that his wife, Catherine Giudici, recently took their kids — Samuel, 10, Isaiah, 8, and Mia, 6 — to a routine pediatrician’s appointment, where the doctor noticed some weight reduction in Isaiah.
After Giudici, 40, mentioned that Isaiah had been urinating more often, the doctor ordered a glucose test. They were then instructed to go to the hospital.
“So we were there Tuesday through Friday, and yeah, it was loads,” Lowe continued. “It was hard because, so far as we knew, and Isaiah knew, he was a healthy boy. He didn’t really show any symptoms outside of frequent urination, and the subsequent thing he knows, he’s getting blood tests and shots every two hours, which in fact he hates as an 8-year-old.”
Lowe added that it was “incredibly difficult” to observe his son “principally scream for help.”
“We’re attempting to tell him, ‘Hey, buddy, you have got to. It’s good for you. It’s medicine.’ But in fact, 8-year-olds don’t fully understand that,” he noted. “So, anyway, we’re grateful that our pediatrician was smart enough to do the blood test, and all of the doctors and nurses at Children’s Health in Dallas were amazing.”
Lowe added that he and his family are “getting through it,” although Isaiah has struggled with getting five shots a day.
“The toughest part, outside of that, is just type of the acknowledgement that his freedom to snack as he pleases, or go to a friend’s house and have lunch, like, he can’t do this anymore because we now have to remain on top of his carbs and insulin and all that stuff,” he explained. “But what we keep being told over and once again is it can turn out to be normal. It’s the brand new normal, and he’s doing great. Hates the shots, but as soon as he gets the shot, he’s back to his old tricks.”
Lowe concluded by thanking fans for his or her support and promising to maintain his followers updated.

Giudici first revealed Isaiah’s diagnosis via Instagram on Tuesday, July 21.
“This past week has been a rough one for the Lowes. Our precious boy Isaiah was admitted to Children’s Hospital and diagnosed with type 1 diabetes,” she wrote. “Our wonderful pediatrician noticed some symptoms at our annual appointment that stuck out to her.”
She continued, “He had lost 11 kilos since his last visit (we thought he just had a growth spurt) and had been drinking and peeing A LOT (it’s really hot here in the summertime). Otherwise healthy and energetic, she ran some tests and sent us to the emergency room based on those alarming results. Thankful for the nurses, doctors and staff who gave us a four-year college education on his condition in 4 days.”
Giudici then praised Isaiah for a way he has handled his treatment.
“This tough boy has endured countless injections, 4 days away from his home and a life-style and routine that feels very very foreign,” she continued. “He’s done all this without losing his playful spirit and a joy that doesn’t make sense. Plenty of tears, pain and confusion too, but he has been a trooper, absolute confidence about it.”
