Mortal Kombat’s next chapter is coming, eventually — Ed Boon just won’t inform you anything about it.
In a brand new interview with Collider, the NetherRealm Studios co-creator confirmed the studio is “definitely pursuing one other Mortal Kombat game,” while making clear he can’t elaborate without getting himself in trouble. Boon’s full quote: “I wish I could tease something. But we’re definitely pursuing one other Mortal Kombat game, and we’re definitely doing more as well. There are a variety of pots on the stove, not only with games but with other types of media too.” That “other types of media” language is notable: the Mortal Kombat cinematic universe has been heating up, with Mortal Kombat II apparently tracking for a robust box office performance and a 3rd film already reported to be in development.
The “more as well” portion of the quote has the fighting game community speculating about Injustice 3. A brand new leak earlier this week had suggested an Injustice 3 reveal was imminent from NetherRealm, and Boon’s deliberately broad answer has done nothing to quash that speculation. In response to ComicBook, the cadence of NetherRealm releases over the past decade suggests an Injustice 3 could realistically arrive in 2027, potentially before the subsequent foremost Mortal Kombat entry.
Mortal Kombat 1 launched in 2023 and has continued to receive support in the shape of DLC fighters and balance patches. The franchise stays certainly one of the best-selling and most consistently profitable fighting game series within the industry, so a follow-up was never really unsure. Boon’s comments are the closest thing to confirmation that the wheels are actively turning.
For PC players, the Mortal Kombat series has been a real priority for NetherRealm: MK1 launched day-and-date on PC and has received ongoing support there. Whether the subsequent entry continues that pattern — or takes a timed console exclusivity detour — will probably be one to look at because the reveal approaches.
