Mindy Kaling Opens Up About Pressure Of Losing Weight

While Mindy Kaling doesn’t necessarily love the thought of her body being a subject of conversation online, she’s grown accustomed to it. In a brand new interview, the “Running Point” creator opened up about her weight-loss journey, which has garnered massive attention over time. In accordance with Kaling, 46, she began taking her health journey seriously not for herself, but for those closest to her.

Speaking with Bustle, Kaling said going through a body transformation as a public figure will be mentally difficult, especially when fans share their unfiltered thoughts a couple of person’s recent look.

“It’s sometimes no fun when considered one of your favorite actors loses weight. You’ve got an idea of what they were like if you grew attached to them, and it made them endear themselves to you,” she said. “After all, it’s never a joy to be scrutinized, but in addition I really understand it, as someone who consumes popular culture.”

“Do I get up on daily basis being like, ‘I look amazing and I’m so gorgeous’? No, unsurprisingly, but I really feel so healthy,” she said.

In accordance with Kaling, her reason for shedding pounds has shifted over time, stating that previously she “would wish to drop extra pounds for vanity reasons.”

Today, Kaling said her fitness journey is more about stopping health issues reminiscent of diabetes. “I had it on each side of my family, and attempting to avoid those sorts of things will, I believe, help longevity for me, and that’s my goal,” she said.

This, after all, isn’t the primary time that Kaling has spoken out about her body or fitness goals. In 2014, she spoke with Vogue and admitted she still struggles with insecurities about her public image.

“There’s a complete list of things I’d probably change about myself,” she said, revealing that she’s “at all times” attempting to lose 15 kilos. But even then, Kaling said her goal isn’t to be “skinny.”

“I don’t wish to be skinny. I’m continuously in a state of self-improvement, but I don’t beat myself up over it,” she said.

Elsewhere within the interview, Kaling said that she’ll also experiment with different looks when she’s fluctuating between sizes. “After I’m at my thinnest, I are likely to wear things that don’t exhibit my body,” she said.

“But after I’m greater, I’ll go body-con, which comes from a spot of ‘That is my perimeter, in case you were wondering if I used to be actually much greater,’” she added.

And Kaling isn’t alone in her feelings. In accordance with PEOPLE, Grammy-winning singer Lizzo shared the same message in 2024, revealing that her weight reduction journey had caused confusion amongst her fans.

Lizzo went on to say that while she was actively working on changing her body, her plan was never to be “thin.”

“I’ve at all times loved moving my body. I’ve at all times loved figuring out,” she said. “I’m very holistically conscious, like I’m very hippie-dippie and woo woo with regards to food and supplements and just desirous about my body and the environment, and I believe numerous people see a fat individual that way and immediately just assume every part they’re doing is to be thin. In a previous interview, Lizzo, often known as a vocal leader within the body-positivity movement, said she was happy with how she presents herself to the general public.

“I believe I actually have a extremely hot body! I’m a body icon, and I’m embracing that an increasing number of on daily basis,” she said. “It might not be one person’s ideal body type identical to, say, Kim Kardashian won’t be someone’s ideal, but she’s a body icon and has created a modern-day beauty standard.
