Cub Swanson needed to battle some adversity before moving into the Octagon for the last time.

It’s very rare to see fighters leave the game on their very own terms and with a win, especially within the UFC where the caliber is so high.

Michael Chiesa’s last dance at UFC Seattle resulted in one among the rare examples of a counter to this, together with his exit playing out in storybook fashion.

Following this past weekend, you possibly can add Swanson, who stopped Nate Landwehr in the primary round, to that list, though things might have been very different.

Cub Swanson says a possible ear infection was a ‘blessing in disguise’ since it forced him to take things easy

It had been over a 12 months since Cub Swanson last competed by the point he pulled off a remarkable victory in his final fight.

Many could be quick to argue that the 45-fight veteran showed in Miami that he can still compete at a high level, with the 42-year-old rolling back the years on the Kaseya Center.

That being said, Swanson has been honest about how difficult the training camps could be to get through, and this one, up until the last minute, was no different.

“This one was a bit of bit tougher but I got through it however the crazy thing is I woke up not feeling too great,” he said on the Anik & Florian podcast. “I feel I’m battling a bit of little bit of an ear infection. I are likely to get them because I’ve had fractures in my face so I are likely to get ear infections so much so I wasn’t feeling too great.”

Swanson said that he didn’t tell his coaches and that he believes this health issue was a “blessing in disguise” since it forced him to take things easy throughout the day.

“It made me like super focused and made me warm up really chill,” he reflected.
