The gingerbread man angle on “WWE SmackDown” was funny for some time, and it form of brought out a subtle, silly Attitude Era vibe. Trick Williams began calling then-United States Champion Sami Zayn a “gingerbread man” of their feud leading as much as WWE WrestleMania 42, even going so far as releasing a diss track alongside Lil Yachty with the identical title, all making fun of Zayn’s hair color and construct.
Williams brought out an individual in a life-sized (or man-sized?) gingerbread man costume to proceed to egg on Zayn, however the second time the costumed person accompanied Williams and Yachty to the ring, it was, in fact, Zayn, beneath the gingerbread head. He beat them each down while wearing the costume, and it was funny. After all it was Zayn within the costume, as anyone who has watched WWE for an extended time period would realize, nevertheless it was still cute and amusing. And that is where your complete thing must have ended.
On Friday’s edition of the blue brand, in a few of the most Vince McMahon-esque booking I’ve seen in a hot minute, Zayn cut a promo on the empty gingerbread man costume in the course of the ring, then attacked it. Okay, that is also effective, I suppose, as I realize they’re attempting to turn Zayn fully heel, but then WWE just needed to take it even further, and that is when things got ridiculous. Medical staff checked on the, again, EMPTY, costume within the ring and took it back to the trainer’s room.
We then saw a serious update with Cathy Kelley backstage, accompanied by Williams, who was informed the gingerbread man is dead. At that time Williams vowed to tackle Zayn for the title he won at WrestleMania, this time at Backlash. It was then further revealed that a funeral shall be held for the gingerbread man on “SmackDown” next week. Yeesh.
That is a first-rate example of “SmackDown” not needing its current three hour runtime, which thankfully, reportedly, involves an end at the top of the month. The “funeral” is clearly going to guide to a brawl before Backlash between Williams and Zayn, but WWE creative beating the gingerbread man angle into the bottom is pretty lame. It also makes Zayn seem like a really silly heel, relatively than a serious one, which in turn doesn’t make him seem like any kind of great contender to get the US Championship back.
Zayn’s character direction was already murky as fans began to boo him, and now it’s much more confusing, and overall, form of lame. WWE creative is the actual loser this week.
