It’s still in its infancy, but MyAEW, the AEW owned streaming service, is already starting to make waves because it partners up with several outside promotions, including promotional partner CMLL and indie promotions like PRODUCE and 1FW, to air their shows on the platform. That has people wondering if MyAEW could also grow to be the house of video libraries from now defunct promotions like Pro Wrestling Guerilla or Lucha Underground, something AEW owner Tony Khan was asked about on last week’s pre-Forbidden Door media call.
But while Khan admitted he was open to the thought of adding video libraries, he admitted his most important goal for MyAEW content wasn’t adding old content. Quite, it was with the ability to broadcast live content from other promotions, with the intention to help those corporations, and their wrestlers, expand their presence.
“I’m eager about promoting lots of these corporations, and I believe we will work along with them to develop their wrestlers, to develop their platforms, to grow their corporations and get more opportunities for them by featuring their wrestling shows on MyAEW,” Khan said. “So I believe that is an incredible opportunity. So far as buying the corporate’s video libraries, it depends. It might should rely upon the situation.
“The one library I’ve gone out and purchased like that was as a part of a much bigger sale after I purchased Ring of Honor from Sinclair. And that is an incredibly library, and considered one of the highest wrestling promotions of the past 40 years. And in that sense, it was a significant, major transaction. For MyAEW, there absolutely might be an incredible opportunity to amass more libraries, it’s an incredible thought. But I’m also very eager about working with the promotions to feature their wrestling, and I do not necessarily should go buy them out or take over. I believe it’s good to have the ability to disseminate and stream lots of the good wrestling all around the world, and provides these people a platform.”
