Santa Monica Studio just gave God of War fans a release window without actually announcing one. In a follow-up to its San Diego Comic-Con panel announcement on X, the studio confirmed that God of War Laufey can be available on disc, and due to Sony’s own recent policy change, that one detail tells us the sport arrives before January 2028.
As we covered last week, Sony announced that physical disc production for all latest games releasing on PlayStation consoles can be discontinued starting January 2028, with latest titles going digital-only from that time on. The corporate was explicit that the change has no impact on games released before that date, which implies any game confirmed for a disc release has to ship ahead of the cutoff. Sony hasn’t attached a release date to God of War Laufey yet, so a confirmed disc version narrows the window to sometime before 2028 and it’s essentially the most concrete timing information we’ve gotten.
As for the panel itself, God of War Laufey headlines PlayStation’s Comic-Con slate on Friday, July 24, in Ballroom 20 at 5:30 PM Pacific (8:30 PM Eastern). Game director Ariel Lawrence and head of creative Cory Barlog lead the conversation alongside forged members Deborah Ann Woll (Laufey), Chris Judge (Kratos), Jack Quaid (Phranque), and Perlina Lau (Rue), marking the forged’s first appearance because the game’s reveal. Sony says the panel will share latest details in regards to the heroes of Laufey, together with behind-the-scenes insights from development and the performance capture work.
PlayStation has more planned in San Diego beyond Kratos. MARVEL’s Wolverine gets its own Hall H panel on Thursday, July 23, with Insomniac Games leadership and actors Liam McIntyre (Wolverine) and Krizia Bajos (Jean Grey) unveiling latest details ahead of the sport’s September 15 launch on PlayStation 5. That’s followed by a MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls panel with Arc System Works and Marvel Games, which is teasing surprise announcements, and the fighter can be playable on the Marriott Marquis throughout the show. On the show floor, fans can grab MARVEL’s Wolverine claws and a prequel comic on the Marvel booth from July 23 to 26. Expect loads of announcements out of the weekend.
