What’s yet one more documentary in regards to the brutal 2022 quadruple homicide of 4 University of Idaho students?
On July 29, Netflix will join Peacock (The Idaho Student Murders) and Amazon Prime Video (One Night in Idaho: The College Murders) with an Idaho student murders documentary series of its own, The Idaho Murders: College Nightmare. But this one is the “definitive” one, so says Netflix and executive producer Joe Berlinger (Cold Case: Who Killed JonBenét Ramsey).
Skye Borgman (of the superb Netflix docuseries Unknown Number: The High School Catfish) directs The Idaho Murders: College Nightmare, which boasts “unprecedented access to the victims’ families and police footage,” per the streamer. You may see a number of the bodycam capture within the trailer (below).
On Nov. 13, 2022, 4 University of Idaho students were murdered in an off-campus home. For weeks, their killer was unknown. DNA evidence left behind on a knife sheath pointed to Bryan Kohberger, a PhD student on the nearby Washington State University, who has since pleaded guilty to the murders.
“Once I first got here to this story, I kept coming back to 1 easy thought: 4 young people lost their lives, they usually deserved to be remembered for way over the tragedy that took them,” Borgman said in a press release. “Making this series became deeply personal to me because I felt a responsibility to maintain Kaylee Goncalves, Madison Mogen, Xana Kernodle and Ethan Chapin at the middle of each decision we made. At a time when a lot attention has been focused on the case itself, I felt it was vital to create something that brings the main focus back to who they were, the lives they lived and the love that also surrounds them.”
“As a father of two daughters who had great college experiences, this case struck a nerve with me, unlike many stories I’ve covered,” Berlinger said. “Though we were among the many first documentarians on the scene, it was vital to us to inform the whole story. This documentary is the definitive account: unprecedented access to key relations, never-before-seen bodycam footage, police interviews revealing case details for the primary time, and access to forensic evidence. We felt the very best method to honor the victims was to inform the total, accurate story of the whole lot that happened that horrible night in Idaho.”
Gina Scarlata, Jon Kamen and Jen Isaacson also executive produce the three-episode series, which hails from RadicalMedia and Third Eye Motion Picture Company.
