Within the midst of a quiet offseason within the National Hockey League, there have been waves out of Detroit because it was announced that Steve Yzerman could be stepping down as General Manager of the Red Wings and moving as much as be a senior advisor to CEO Chris Ilitch.

The move is making many individuals scratch their heads, wondering why now. If the Red Wings were going to maneuver on from Yzerman, possibly they need to have done it after the season ended to have a brand new staff in place for the draft and free agency.
“The timing of it’s from my standpoint, if he was being pushed out, why now?” Helene St. James said on Sirius XM NHL Network Radio Power Play segment on Wednesday. “It’s been three months for the reason that season ended. To me, this means more that he decided to step back. But it surely leaves a messy situation. I mean, whoever succeeds him still has to cope with the entire Dylan Larkin mess, amongst many other things, attempting to make this team appear to be they won’t be the worst team within the East next season.”

But Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman noted on the Wednesday night edition of NHL Tonight on the NHL Network that there may be some truth to what Helene St. James said earlier within the day. Perhaps Steve Yzerman said being the General Manager in Detroit will not be for him anymore. His GM style won’t work in today’s NHL.
“I used to be surprised. I actually was because I didn’t see it coming right now. I agree with you, the timing is somewhat bit odd, but what I believe here is that now we have seen a tumultuous previous few weeks and months within the NHL between the offer sheets, the trade requests, not only in Detroit but elsewhere. A number of the changes we’re seeing the contracts, and a part of me wonders, and I’ll say this: I, Steve Yzerman, keeps very close counsel.
There’s not loads of individuals who know what he’s pondering, so loads of us are guessing here, and I’ll say that. But a part of me wondered if possibly Yzerman saw where this was all going and said, ‘It’s time for me. This will not be for me.’ And possibly he’ll come right out and say, ‘Elliotte, you only got here up with the stupidest theory that anyone has ever provide you with.’ But it surely wouldn’t surprise me if there have been some extent of truth in that.”
We all know Yzerman has been a tough negotiator relating to contracts, not only during his time in Detroit but in addition as the final manager of the Tampa Bay Lightning. He wants players arrange under a cap structure. Yzerman likes young players brought before paying the large bucks, and the last word knock on him was that he was not aggressive enough to show the Red Wings around.

Yzerman was too patient as a general manager, and it rubbed a few of his players the improper way. Yzerman can’t handle the brand new workings of the NHL. He doesn’t want to offer these players the dollars which might be being thrown around. So when the book is written, possibly it would come out that this was his decision to step aside and never the organization forcing him aside.
“Like, the League has really modified loads in a really short time, and it just makes me wonder if he sort of said that where the Red Wings must go and what this organization goes to must do, it may not just be decisions that I like, or I’m comfortable with when it comes to where the league is headed. So, on some level, I’ve checked out all of this and the timing of this announcement and wondered if that’s a part of the conversation,” Friedman added.
Given how things were run the last couple of seasons, it’s surprising the announcement didn’t come sooner. Now, all eyes are on Dylan Larkin and on who the Detroit Red Wings hire as the following general manager.
