ALTERNERGY Holdings Corp. has began delivering electricity from its 128-megawatt (MW) Tanay wind farm to the Luzon grid, becoming the primary project awarded under the second Green Energy Auction (GEA-2) in 2023 to provide power to the grid.
In an announcement on Thursday, Alternergy said the wind farm began supplying electricity after the energization of its interconnection facilities through a substation connected to the 500-kilovolt (kV) transmission backbone of the National Grid Corp. of the Philippines (NGCP).
Once fully operational, the Tanay wind farm is anticipated to generate about 283.5 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of renewable electricity annually, enough to provide about 118,125 households, while avoiding roughly 197,780 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions annually.
“That is the culmination of years of dedication, collaboration and exertions by our employees, contractors, financing partners, government agencies, LGUs (local government units) and host communities,” Alternergy President Gerry P. Magbanua said.
As of July 20, the Tanay project was 89% complete and remained on target for industrial operations in October. The 64-MW Alabat wind farm in Quezon province, meanwhile, was 83% complete.
The 2 projects form a part of Alternergy’s renewable energy expansion strategy because it seeks to grow its portfolio of wind, solar, hydroelectric, and battery energy storage projects to at least one gigawatt (GW) by 2030.
The Tanay and Alabat wind farms are backed by A Brown Company, Inc.’s P2.3-billion investment in Alternergy.
Last week, Alternergy said ABC Energy, Inc., a subsidiary of A Brown, accomplished its investment in the corporate’s wind project corporations.
A Brown acquired a 40% stake in Alternergy Tanay Wind Corp., which is developing the Tanay wind farm, and Alabat Wind Power Corp., which is developing the Alabat wind farm.
The planned transaction will likely be undertaken after the investment by ABC Energy within the two project corporations. — Sheldeen Joy Talavera
