England announced Joe Root as their recent Test captain on Thursday, July 30, while Recent Zealand great and former Chennai Super Kings (CSK) head coach Stephen Fleming was appointed because the team’s recent red-ball head coach. The sweeping changes follow Ben Stokes’ retirement from international cricket and Brendon McCullum’s dismissal as England’s Test coach.
Root previously captained England in Tests between 2017 and 2022 before handing over the reins to Stokes. During his first stint, England won 27 of their 65 Tests, losing 27 and drawing 11. The 35-year-old also captained the side within the second Test of England’s most up-to-date home series against India in Stokes’ absence.
Meanwhile, Stephen Fleming stepped down as Chennai Super Kings (CSK) head coach earlier this month, ending a highly successful tenure that saw the franchise win five IPL titles between 2009 and 2026. England have endured a disappointing run in Test cricket, suffering back-to-back series defeats to Recent Zealand at home and Australia away.
They currently sit seventh within the 2025-27 World Test Championship (WTC) standings on the halfway stage of the cycle. Fleming is ready to take charge as England’s Test head coach after the upcoming home series against Pakistan, with Marcus Trescothick serving as interim coach for that project.

Joe Root expressed his excitement after being re-appointed as England’s Test captain, saying he’s desperate to work alongside recent head coach Stephen Fleming to create a successful team environment. The veteran batter stays England’s highest run-scorer in Test cricket, having amassed 14,114 runs, including a national record 41 centuries.
Speaking about his return as Test captain, Root said (via the ECB):
“It’s a terrific honour and privilege to be asked to be England Men’s Test captain again. The Test captaincy is a difficult but hugely rewarding job and, after having fun with a temporary taste of it again working with [Brendon] McCullum last month, I’m excited to guide this next generation of players forward.”
He further added:
“The chance to do this alongside Stephen can be an enormous motivator. He has proved over an extended time frame that he’s an exceptional leader with a terrific knowledge of the sport, and I’m looking forward to working with him and helping to construct a winning environment.”
